Video Case

1. There are different scenes that were portrayed in the video. Alex is busy doing his report
then something came up with the machine that Mary could not fix. First Alex was
applying selective perception became a barrier because he did not actively listen and he
expects that Mary can handle it on her own. Which results in missing the production
deadline that can cause loss of the company. The second scene shows the noise barrier
because there is a telephone call and filtering because he ignored it and passed the work
to somebody else that results in Mary being injured because she experienced difficulty in
hearing.

2. During the first scene, Mary's facial expression can show that the problem with the
machine needs to be fixed as soon as possible, or else huge consequences will appear.
She used nonverbal communication by portraying what is happening in the machine with
her hands. She was very stressed and was disappointed when Alex did not actively listen
to her. She was also scared because Alex passed the responsibility to her by expecting
that she could fix it on her own. During the second scene, when there was a phone call
she tried to louder her voice so that Alex would be able to hear her, and with that kind of
verbal tone and emotions, it can be assumed that the problem was huge. And when Alex
passed the responsibility to another person Mary got injured by experiencing difficulty in
hearing that affects their communication.

3. Organizational communication is when to or more individuals in a group are sharing

information. Four different paths of communication are applied in the Organization,
which are upward communication, downward communication, diagonal communication,
and horizontal communication. In the video, the communication between Mary and Alex
is an example of upward communication because Mary is approaching Alex which is in a
higher position than her. The scene where Alex's boss is asking him what happened
yesterday is an example of downward communication because Alex is in the lower
position. And during the second scene when there as an accident in the machine and
Mary was rushing to Alex's office and two guys came inside too, it was an example of
horizontal communication because they are at the same level.
