LESSON 1 – PROCESS OF COMMUNICATION

Spur to Spark Communication is an exciting subject matter yet complicated practice. It
teaches us how to value relationships, yet it could break people apart. The following are
quotations about communication from different personalities. Do you agree or disagree
with these quotations? Tick (/) the cell that matches your reaction to the quote.

Pick out the quotation that you like best. Explain why you like it.

Quotation:

“When we can talk about our feelings, they become less overwhelming, less upsetting. And less scary.

The people we trust with that important talk can help us know that we are not alone.” -Fred Rogers

Why do I like it?

I like this quotation because it relates to my way of life. I am a shy person. I don’t usually talk

and share to others about my feelings, my personal opinions and etc. But if that person is whom I trust,

whom I call my real friends then I have the confidence and the feeling of excitement if I share it to them.
1. Has the framework FULLY captured the process of communication? ___ Yes ✓No

2. What suggestions do you have to improve the framework?

I suggest that the framework use a correct arrow or an appropriate way of connecting
them so that it can be understand clearly and not confusing.

3. Explain the framework.

The framework shows that the sender sends a message using channels and barriers are
found everywhere but the sender also sends a feedback which is not right because the
receiver gives the feedback.
4. Read the following communication situations. Explain the reason behind the results of
the decisions Alice and Ryan made in these communication situations. Advise them on how
they could communicate better.
A. Alice, a 13-year old girl, wants to join her friends for a camping party. She knew her
mother would not allow her to go and that she will get mad if she even attempts to seek her
permission. Still, she tried to ask her through a text message. Result: The mother became
even angrier.
Alice knew that her mother would not allow her to go to camping party. She knew that she will
get mad so she tried to ask her through a text message, so the result her mother became even angrier.

For me, for them to communicate better, it’s nice to asked permission face to face, because
through text message, we can’t really convey the right emotion or feeling of what we want to talk about.
The receiver may find it different. It’s better to talk personally with clear, sincere and honest voice.

B. Mike requested Ryan, his brother, to clean up the kitchen. It was a heavy day for him at
work, and his energy was wearing out that he could not even cook that night. Ryan replied:
Can't you see? I am doing homework! Result: Mike left and slept at his friend’s apartment.
Mike asked Ryan to clean the kitchen. He’s tired but Ryan replied in a very strong tone. So, the
result Mike left and slept at his friend’s apartment.

For me, Ryan should lower the tone of his voice answering. Mike requested in a courteous
manner but Ryan could just answer politely and respectfully.

C. Alice felt her relationship with Ryan should end that day, but she did not have the guts
to tell him. So, she asked her friend Melissa to speak to Ryan about it and make sure the
relationship ends that night. Result: Ryan asked Alice to talk.
Alice feel that she and Ryan should break up but she doesn’t have the guts to tell him so she
asked her friend to speak to Ryan but the result he asked Alice to talk.

Alice should have personally spoken Ryan that she will end the relationship in that day. So that
she can properly explain, give all the explanations, the answers and she will have nothing to worry about
the next day.

D. Ryan has been experiencing anxiety during this time of pandemic. For him, it was
already too much to handle. So, he went to his heart doctor, who diagnosed him with heart
regurgitation and gave him pills to reduce regurgitation attacks. Result: Ryan is unable to
handle his anxiety more effectively.
Ryan has been experiencing anxiety and he asked his heart doctor for help and the result Ryan
unable to handle his anxiety more effectively.

Ryan should not ask her heart doctor for curing his anxiety. He should have asked the right doctor who is
specialized to treat anxiety like the psychologist. It can help him lessen and be more effective in handling
the anxiety.
LESSON 2 – PRINCIPLES AND ETHICS OF COMMUNICATION
Spur to Spark
Read the following situations that happen during communication events. React to them.
Draw a line from the communication situation found on the left to the emoticon that tells
your reaction on the right.

1. Mishaps in the government could derail a sudden

surge of development – the secretary for housing
and development said Monday, October 3 to high
school students. Most of the students left the venue
on the first 15mins of his one-hour talk.
2. A student submitted an essay on “Study from
Home”. When the paper was returned, she found the
following phrases underlined:
A lot of teachers continue to serve due to the fact
that they are committed to their profession.
Then the teacher suggested:
Teachers continue to serve because of their
commitment.
3. The doctor that my sister consulted with due to
the chest infection used examples and analogies to
explain her condition.
4. When my friend explained what happened that
night, she quoted statements of people in the
incident. Before she told me about it, she verified
these statements by asking the investigators of the
crime.
5. A small barrio community invited a man to
speak about peace and order. However, the
audience knew this man for abusing his wife and
children physically.

With these principles in mind, let us go back to the communication situations we reacted to
in the "Spur to Spark" section of this lesson. Given the situation, identify the quality of a
message (the 6Cs) the sender conformed with or didn't. Explain how the situation
warranted or failed to warrant that quality.

1. “Mishaps in the government could derail a sudden surge of development,” the secretary
for housing and development said Monday, October 3 to high school students. Most of the
students left the venue on the first 15mins of his one-hour talk.

Quality: The sender didn’t conform with Clarity, Concreteness and Completeness.

Explanation: The qualities that the sender didn’t conform shows that the sender is not clear, need more
information and doesn’t’ really like the interest of the receiver that’s why most of the students left the
venue.

2. A student submitted an essay on “Study from Home”. When the paper was returned, she
found the following phrases underlined:

A lot of teachers continue to serve due to the fact that they are committed to their
profession.

Then the teacher suggested: Teachers continue to serve because of their commitment.

Quality: The sender didn’t conform with Conciseness and Correctness.

Explanation: the student is the sender which he submitted has errors that’s why the teacher suggested
him short and more understandable version of it.

3. A small barrio community invited a man to speak about peace and order. However, the
audience knew this man for abusing his wife and children physically

Quality: The sender didn’t conform with Clarity, Correctness, Courtesy, Concreteness, Correctness and
Completeness.

Explanation: The qualities that the sender conformed shows the sender will only have brief and short
topic. The qualities that the sender didn’t conform shows that the sender is not sure what to talk about the
topic because it is not his way of life. It may show that he will be not be effective in communicating to the
audience.
4. The doctor that my sister consulted with due to infection of the chest used examples and
analogies to explain her condition.

Quality: The sender conformed with, Concreteness

Explanation: The qualities that the sender conformed shows the sender is very clear to his receiver.
He/she used examples and analogies that can help the sister understand more about her condition which
makes the sender a very effective communicator.

5. When my friend explained what happened that night, she quoted statements of witnesses
of the event. Before she told me about it, she verified these statements by asking the people
involved

Quality: The sender conformed with Completeness

Explanation: The qualities that the sender conformed shows the sender is an effective communicator
because the friend explained what happened that night with facts and truth. The sender also quoted it
improves the message that’s why the receiver fully understand of what happened.
ETHICS

Activity 1. Identify what ethics of communication is violated and should be exercised in

each communication situation below. Then, explain the ethical issues involved.

1. John, the manager in Company Y, believes that to become an effective manager, he

needs to increase employee productivity through yelling and using foul language that can
be qualified already as verbal harassment/abuse. The manager feels satisfied seeing how
submissive they are to him.

From an employee’s point of view, what ethics of communication is violated? How should
this be addressed?

John violated 2 ethics of communication which are Speak Non- Judgmentally and Avoid a
Negative Tone. John is not an ideal manager. Yelling and using a foul language is not practiced
of a good leader. He must change his way of treating the employees because there a chance that
the employees will resign. The best way to do it is to make them understand. Respecting them
and if one have done something wrong you can talk to them nicely in a sincere ton.

2. Your elder sister stops you in the middle of explaining to your parents why you failed in
one class. She then starts opening your cellphone and reading messages. She yells, saying
that you have involved yourself in an intimate relationship and vices that made you lose
interest in school.

What ethics of communication is violated by your elder sister? What ethical issues are
involved in this communication situation?

My elder sister violated 4 ethics of communication which are Speak Non-Judgmentally,

Avoid a Negative Tone, Do Not Interrupt Others and Respect Privacy and Confidentiality.

Ethical issues involved is when my elder sister interrupts my explanation to my parents

and my right to privacy has been violated. She’s disrespectful towards my private life and could
make myself think something bad or losing my self-confidence.
Activity 2. Ethics denotes the grounds of what is right and wrong in human behavior. It is
essential to be guided by communication ethics to prevent and reduce communication
issues and for the workplace to be functional. Tick (/) the cell that determines whether or
not the following workplace scenarios are ethical or unethical.

Work with Might The comics below show a violation of ethics and principles of
communication. Explain how the ethics and principles are violated in each comic.
Take note of the following standard for grading your answers:
Content (The explanation contains the ethics and principles violated and explains why and how
they are violated.) 0-5 6-10 11-15 16-20
Organization and Format (The explanation follows this format – cause, effect, solution. It
explains the ethics and principles violated first. Then, it presents the potential effect of such a
violation. It ends with proposing how the conversation should be repaired to foster ethics in
communication.) 0-5 6-10 11-15 16-20
Language (English usage shows minimal errors.) 1-3 4-6 7-9 10-12

1. The comic shows a violation of ethics and principles of communication. First, he violated the
ethics of being truthful and honest, because he hides the truth and there is more that we should
know about. Second, lack of clarity, courtesy, and completeness are violated. When he was asked
and his answer was not clear enough, incomplete because there is a lack of information given. He
also has no courtesy because he was smiling and not really serious about answering the question.
And because of this, the information that will be gathered will not be accurate and there will be a
possibility that he will be asked again and again. The best thing he'll do is, to tell the truth, state
the fact, and be ready to accept the consequences.

2. This comic does not show the ethic of truthfulness and honesty, it is shown that the man who
answered was not being reasonable, he's not being fair, there's no justice of what he's saying. He
also has no courtesy because the term "So What?" is not an appropriate answer. there's no clarity
of what he's saying, no supporting details, and not complete because he didn't accurately answer
the girl. And the effect of this will lead to fighting and it will become a big issue that may lead to
an investigation. The solution may be to change the ways of that firm, changing the traditions that
they have practiced for a long time so that they can be more truthful and good to the eyes of the
people.
