1 General
1.1 Running principle of the coal mill
MGS4772 Double-Input and–Output Coal mill includes two symmetric
grinding loops. Each loop is described as following:
Raw coal is unloaded from hopper by coal feeder with automatic speed
control. Coal is fallen down into mixing box from outlet of coal feeder,after
predried by sideway air,coal is sent to coal mill through hollow shaft by
rotary motion of screw transporter and then ground by steel balls’ motion in
the rotating barrel.
Primary hot air comes into coal mill through center pipe in the hollow
shaft. After coal is dried, primary air will bring the coal dust out of coal
cracker through circular path between center pipe and hollow shaft in the
reverse direction of raw coal coming into coal mill.
Coal dust, primary air and sideway air come from mixing box are
mixed together coming into separator at top of coal mill. The separator is
generally installed at same height as coal feeder.
Coarse grain coal dust is dropped back into hollow shaft inlet by
gravity action,mixed with raw coal and ground again,the ground coal dust
is suspended in primary air and sent to burners from outlet of separator and
then sprayed into boiler for burning.
Unique grinding medium of this coal mill is steel balls,grinding is
achieved through the friction between steel balls and raw coal. Because of
grinding phenomenon, grinding medium is unavoidably worn. If corrosive
ash content of coal is high or high grinding fineness required, worn
phenomenon is serious much.

1.2 Mechanical description of the coal mill
This coal mill is mainly composed of the rotary barrel with hollow shaft
to be installed on two bearings (one on each end).
1.2.1 Barrel
This barrel is made of a piece of steel sheet by rolling, shell formed by
welding and two end covers. Antiwear lining boards are installed in shell and
end covers, lining board can drive the steel ball.
1.2.2 Hollow shaft
Hollow shaft is a hollow body and secured on end cover with bolts, it
has two actions:
(1)Used for delivery of air, coal feeding and discharge of air-coal dust
mixture.

Hot air comes into coal mill through center pipe rotated by beam,
inside of the beam is fixed on lining board, and outside is supported by
external rolling bearing at outlet of air-heater box.
Raw coal is sent into barrel through rotary vane fixed at outside of
center pipe by protective chain.
(2)Hollow shaft can make barrel rotating by cooperation of slide bearing.
1.2.3 Bearing
Structure of bearing can compensate the droop of coal mill at load.
Bearing body is made of antiwear metal,which can prevent any damage,
bearing seat is made of welding steel component.
When lubricating oil is sent out by hydraulic power unit:
——At HP,oil is sent to bottom of hollow shaft to ―float up‖ it.
——At LP, a great number of oil is sent to top of hollow shaft to cool it.

Oil is sent to bottom of hollow shaft by HP for lubrication.
1.2.4 Sealing system
When operating coal mill is at positive pressure, so there is a special
connecting part between fixed part and rotary part of hollow shaft to prevent
coal dust to be leaked to ambient air.
Connecting part is a flange disk made of synthetic material and attached
on smooth component.
Sealed fan is used to provide reverse pressure to prevent coal dust from
being leaked to outside.
1.2.5Driver
Driver is used top drive coal mill,its energy is supplied by motor.
Speed of the motor is reduced by gear reducer. Reducer outlet end drives
midway spindle of pinion, pinion is meshed with large gear on the coal mill
to transmit the power to barrel.
Large gear and pinion adopt automatic spray lubrication and reducer
adopts sprinkling lubrication.
1.2.6 Slow driver
Slow driver can make coal mill rotated during shutdown and
maintenance operation at 1/100 rated speed. Shutdown at any position can
be achieved.
1.2.7 Sound insulation cover
Because coal mill releases noise, sound insulation cover is provided. It
is made of profile steel in which a layer of rock wool is sandwiched.
1.2.8 Ball adding system
Ball adding system can add balls at such condition as not stop coal mill,
each coal mill has a set of ball adding system.

1.2.9 Deactivating system
As shutdown,water vapor is filled into coal mill for deactivation.
1.3 Description of control system
1.3.1 Temperature control for air-dust mixture at outlet of separator.
This control can be achieved by adjusting opening of cold and hot air
retaining plate,with primary air temperature to control coal dust temperature,
control the outlet temperature in the limited range.
1.3.2 Control of total capacity of primary air
This control makes the primary air passing through coal mill be
proportional to sideway air
Signal to deliver primary air is sent by main controller:
Acc. to flow of coal dust at outlet of coal mill, adjust the air
flow passing through coal mill.
Acc. to flow of coal dust at outlet of coal mill,adjust the
flow of sideway air.
1.3.3 Adjustment of coal level in coal mill
1)Change dust output of the coal mill acc. to boiler load, and
accordingly change the feeding capacity of raw coal.
No matter how the load of coal mill is changed, coal level in the coal
mill should remain unchanged.
Coal level control is accomplished by coal level detection, two
methods:
——By controlling the differential pressure between two points in the coal
mill.
Measure the differential pressure at different two points in the coal mill,
feedback to speed controller of coal feeder, remain the differential pressure

at different point in the coal mill unchanged by adjusting the speed of the
coal feeder.
——By electric ear device
Adjust primary air flow and speed of coal feeder, by detecting sound
signal, to control coal level.
1.3.4 Automatic control system
When fault occurring during operation of coal mill, coal mill is
provided with automatic protection to ensure security.
When boiler is in fault and taking emergency stop,coal mill should
have other own protection,such as luboil can not be stopped, start slow
drive.
When system stops operation,inlet and outlet of the coal mill should be
provided with a set of valves to make coal mill insulated completely.
2 Preparations before test run
2.1 Visual inspection
Before starting coal mill, general inspection necessary to do is as
follows:
1)All components are assembled, without loss of important device,
then coal mill can be safely started.
2)Without obvious damage to be happened,all equipment is in good
condition.
Without mistake during installation, otherwise reinstall. All parts are
installed acc. to design description, during installation, if doubt, propose.
3)Without other sundries(i.g. tools, chip and sawdust)left in.
2.2 Pipe inspection
Before operating,all pipes should be inspected and are ready:

1) Check all valves(turn, open and close), then set valves to On or
Off position acc. to requirements at operating condition.
2) All things required (i.e. water, compressed air)are ready,check
their performance(temperature, pressure).
3)Adjust reducer to let pressure go up to correct pressure value.
4)After all pipe are drained away,close the outlet valve.
2.3 Electric and instrument inspection
General inspection for electric and instrument equipment is carried
out acc. to the following requirements:
Check all wirings (including power, control and instrument)
All cables are laid well,and provided with sleeving.
Carry out operation inspection for instrument as possible(i.g. flow
switch, pressure switch, closing and opening as well as retaining plate)
All junction boxes and control box should be opened for inspection.
Disconnect fuse and all interlocks,check respectively,and study on
all schemes.
Power-driven device is separated from main machine,do idling,
inspect current and rotation direction.
Record the electric energy consumption when power-driven device is
separated from main machine at idling.
2.4 Mechanical inspection
First of all, inspect the firmness of foundation bolts for major
equipment and auxiliaries.
Driver must be inspected, if necessary, dismount coupling to check its
coaxiality.

2.5 Fill of oil and lubricating grease
Check that all lubricating pipes are clean.
Equipment requires lubrication.
Begin to fill oil and lubricating grease.
2.6 Manual inspection
Many equipment should be turned by hand,check that if it has
interferential or inflexible rotation phenomenon.
3 First operation
3.1 General principle
To enable single machine start for operation,interlock should be
disconnected.
First test run should be of idling test run,without coal and steel balls,
disconnected from boiler at same time,but the protection of coal mill should
be in service.
Instrument should be started gradually acc. to procedures and
interlock can not be used, can not use single equipment to start unless the
equipment above has been safely operating a period of time or all operating
parameters are stabilized completely.
Check operation and set position of the instruments.
During operation,technicians check the following items at the place
near equipment normal or not.
——Temperature(i.g. bearing)can not be too high
——Without abnormal noise present
——If consumption of motor is close to the calculated value.
——Without presence of leakage(such as water, oil).
——Oil level is right

——Check the oil film thickness on main bearing of coal mill, because coal
mill can be jacked up by operating the jacking shaft oil pump of main
bearing.
Any abnormal phenomenon that is discovered during initial start must
be carefully analyzed and solved at once, incapable of bequeathing any
problem.
3.2 Special stipulations for individual equipment
3.2.1 Bearing lubrication
Test run for lubricating equipment should be carried out in
manufacturer,lubricating equipment can not be used at such condition as
without oil,switch and cooling circuit of electric heater are ready, start oil
pump when oil temperature conforms to requirements, then check oil
(if no oil comes out within one minute, stop oil pump for
coming out,
inspection).
Check that oil mist spraying on hollow shaft is satisfactory(close to
equal at both side),and oil return pipe is normal.
Check pressure of HP oil pump,record the uplift height at both sides
of coal mill.
Check oil level in oil tank,be sure it exceeds pipe elevation and higher
than min oil level.
Filter on LP pump should be clean periodically.
3.2.2 Reducer lubrication
Start the motor,check oil coming out
Filter must be cleaned frequently
If possible, can open the manhole,check sprinkling instance

3.2.3 Large gear lubrication
Check pressure of compressed air;Air is required without water.
Timing start to one cycle.
Check operation of all components,especially spray oil on large gear.
Nozzle should be able to cover overall width of large gear, oil film formed is
equal.
Adjust spray cycle and interval of spray by two times.
3.2.4 Coal mill
Warning:Coal mill must be stared at the condition without steel balls
and coal.
Start gear cover sealed fan, start motor and reducer.
After smooth operating half -hour,stop the coal mill.
During operation of coal mill , carefully detect temperature on
bushing,if too high,should stop coal mill,observe the hollow shaft and oil
film instances through porthole.
Check vibration of coal mill.
Check operation of large gear and main bearing.
Observe the power equipment driven by coal mill.
3.2.5 Main motor of coal mill
Check bearing temperature.
Check winding temperature.
Record absorbed power of motor.
3.2.6 Screw transporter
Carefully check that if there is friction between hinge cage and hollow
pipe(listening sound).
Check that if the temperature of supporting bearing rises.

Check vibration.
3.2.7 Check that operations of all control systems are normal.
3.2.8 Check the raw coal feeder acc. to operation manual of
manufacturer.
3.3 Inspection after first operation
After initial operation(operating half-hour at best),check coal mill and
its auxiliaries,record the fault,and repair or adjust.

4 Operation of coal mill(adding balls)

Addition of steel balls should be gradually carried out during coal mill
operating.
——1st step: 1/4 of total of steel balls
——2nd step: 2/4 of total of steel balls
——3rd step: 3/4 of total of steel balls
——4th step: 4/4 of total of steel balls
Important prompt:——To avoid firing danger,cannot have coal when
running
——Record the quantity of steel balls to be added into coal mill is very
important.
——Record all characteristics in operation(i.g. absorbed power, vibration
and oil pressure etc.).
——Coal mill operates half-hour at max balls loading capacity.
——First addition of balls must be done through manhole and not ball
adding system.
(1) 1st step
Coal mill, first time, must be added with 25% of total steel balls

quantity,carry through by following method:
Through one manhole door of coal mill,put the manhole upward
under opening of sound insulation cover , bearing lubrication system
operates,barrel needs braking,locked at this position. Start support bearing
lubrication while comes away brake,avoid friction of metal to metal. Crane
is used to help adding grinding medium into barrel. Manhole cover is
installed on barrel.
Start all equipment(including lubrication system, sealed fan).
During operation,check that all equipment is normal,especially
bushing temperature. After normal operating half-hour,stop coal mill,then
cooling.
Check that lining board bolts are loose.
(2) 2nd step
As mentioned above, add 25% steel balls into coal mill again, start
and then check. Stop coal mill after half-hour.
(3) 3rd step and 4th step
Repeat steps mentioned above, add steel balls over.
Complete inspection is carried out after run,and repair the fault and
adjust.
5 Inspection before coal mill operating
Before coal mill is put into operation,ensure that all equipment and
components can normally start and safely operate.
Especially the following inspections required:
Acting parts of coal mill and auxiliaries,especially coal feeder, fan
and sealing system, coal dust, air, shutoff door of mixture pipe of air-dust

and control retaining plate.
2) Individual equipment is proved to have lubrication establishment,
especially oil level, pressure and temperature conform to requirements.
3) Temperature in coal mill, dust delivery system and air system are
normal.
4) Remote control is in normal condition.
5) Alarm system and safety facilities receive operating instruction,
instrument range is set to setting value.
6) Power system such as motor prepares to receive instructions.
7) Check that instruments, indicators, automatic equipment such as
selector switch are in satisfactory state.
8) Fill sufficient oil to filling system in burners in entire phase to ensure
stable burning in boiler and enhance boiler burning in the case of fault.
9) In case firing in coal mill, steam deactivation system and water filling
system can be used, if necessary. Any abnormal phenomenon and those
inconsistent with normal requirements should be recorded in the records of
equipment and of central control room,for major situation and fault, a
decision that should be made is to stop or carefully observe. To do so
operator can understand the situation,the above situation should allow to
take measures to the exceeded range and when exceeding this range,and
should be recorded.
10) Check alarm without coal of coal feeder.
11)Open outlet valve of coal feeder.
12)Check that water cooling system of lubrication equipment is normal,and
check that cooling water is passing through pipe.

13)Adjust sealing system to starting state.
14)Check that all doors and retaining plates of air and coal dust pipes are in
correct positions.
6 In the case of no coal, start coal mill
6.1 Start first coal mill after fuel oil burning.
Without Coal in Coal mill means that formerly coal is present in coal
mill,but during shutdown,ventilation is always carried through,coal storage
in coal mill is reduced possibly.
The following recommendations are suitable simultaneously for hot
state coal mill and cold state coal mill,difference is that operating time of
cold state coal mill(at flow and temperature stably adjusted)is longer than
that of hot state coal mill , stable grinding time is to be considered
necessarily.
Operator must confirm that load of boiler is sufficient before
beginning to burn coal to avoid producing explosion danger in stored fuel in
hearth during startup.
Initial startup must be careful. Boiler must operate at max capacity of
oil-fired equipment. Secondly, because coal dust burning has instability of
short duration,it is necessary to confirm by test how many fuel oil to be
reduced can not bring danger to boiler.
After the steps required in section 3 are completed, make sure that
interlock is in service and able to operate completely, coal mill can be started.
Starting or restarting coal mill at the condition without coal should be
carried through acc. to steps as following.
(1) All controls of grinding system are set to automatic control program.
(2) Control retaining plates of air system, coal dust pipes, raw coal pipes and

ball adding system are closed.
(3) Check that temperatures of all equipment are normal.
(4) Start lubrication system.
Note:LP oil pump of main bearing lubrication system should be started in
few hours before starting coal mill. In normal case,oil pump is operating at
all times,even during grinding shutdown. Operation of oil pump is stopped
only when grinding is stopped long time and in maintenance.
(5)For running flexibility of the coal mill, if doubt, start slow driver few
minutes,then shutoff slow driver.
(6) Check that output system of instruments used to measure the pressure
and coal level in coal mill is in normal operation.
(7)Fireproofing system of coal mill can accept operating instruction.
(8)Start gear cover sealed fan.
(9)Open the valve under raw coal bunker.
(10)Be sure that fuel oil used for burners is burning while coal mill is
started.
(11)Start primary air fan.
(12)Check the flow and pressure of air in the air box.
(13)Check the temperature of primary air, at outlet of air preheater, more
than 150℃.
(14)Start the coal mill by automatic program.
(15)Check that the total of primary air capacity(including air capacity
passing through coal mill and air capacity of sideway)is more than min flow.
(16)Check the automatic purging device of the coal level detection system
on coal mill.
(17)Check that the temperature setting value of separator is able to be adjust

to temperature required.
(18)Start raw coal feeder after outlet temperature of separator reaching
sufficient value(75℃)two minutes or start coal mill nine minutes, set it to
coaling condition.
(19)Monitor the separator outlet temperature,if abnormal,adjust raw coal
flow,check the burning stability and performance,inspect the secondary air
flow of burners to obtain a good burning state.
(20)When electric ear signal is lower than 35% for 2 minutes,control the
coal level in the coal mill through coal feeder.
(21)Step up the load of coal mill,control coal mill load by automatic
program , continue to increase coal mill load in accordance with
requirements for boiler control,check the secondary air to burners.
(22)Be sure that the purging air blows to detector of the coal level control
system every other a period of time.
6.2 Except first coal mill,start coal mill at the condition without coal:
Following first coal mill, before starting remainder coal mills, general
inspections should be made acc. to the stipulations in sections 3 and 5.
Check boiler load,when boiler program allows to start coal mill,
execute the steps in section 6.1.

7 Start coal mill at the condition of coal feeding(after abnormal

,before starting coal mill,general


shutdown or equipment stripped)

inspections should be carried through acc. to requirement in


section 5.
Check boiler load,when the program allows to start coal mill, execute

the following steps.
7.1 Start first coal mill(without other coal mill operating).
(1) All controls related to grinding system of coal mill are set to automatic
control program.
(2) Start the burners related to coal mill,check its ignition and burning
stability.
(3) Start primary air fan.
(4) Check that operation of coal level detection system is normal.
(5) Check the lubricating system.
(6) Start coal mill.
(7) Be sure that outlet temperature of separator is normal. Total capacity of
primary air is higher than min value.
(8) Monitor the temperature of separator,if abnormal, adjust raw coal flow.
(9) Use manual operation if necessary, to make control normal or eliminate
the fault that affects operation of coal mill.
Warning: if coal mill stops due to fault of coal feeder and if coal feeder can
not be used immediately, restart coal mill is prohibited.
7.2 Start remainder coal mills
Before beginning operation,take protective measures acc. to the steps
in section 7.1,start fuel oil burners equivalent to coal dust burners.
Fuel oil burning load must be sufficient to make the burning stable.
8 Coal mill stops
Because of boiler load, requires that coal mill can either systemically
stop or force to stop at emergency situation,i.g. start the interlock to make
coal mill strip suddenly.
When coal mill stops,coal mill in which is full of coal dust(full or

partial coal dust),must use slow driver to make coal mill continue running
to avoid firing in coal mill, operation of slow driver is 6 hours approx.
If shutdown of short duration(less than 40h)
,coal mill can stop at full
load.
If shutdown long time(more than 40h),coal mill must operate
normally ten minutes at the condition without coal feeding, drain away coal
mill and then stop.
When equipment is required for maintenance, coal mill must be
drained away completely,or coal with high activation in coal mill, coal mill
should be drained away at inertial gas condition (mixture of coal dust,
primary air and water vapor).
When slow driver or steam deactivation system can not be used, coal
mill must be drained away and then stop.
When coal is present in coal mill,because strip to stop,slow driver
must be used.
During stop,must pay attention to the temperature on the casing of
grinding system in order to find any abnormal phenomenon or firing danger.
,must burn at all
Before stopping operation(full load or no-load)
times,otherwise operate the oil-fired burners, all oil-fired burners must be
forced to continue operation, until coal dust pipe is purged clean.
9 Drain away coal mill
9.1 Partial drain away(10min)
To do acc. to following steps:
(1) Shut off coal dust burners,use oil-fired burners for combustion, its load
is sufficient to make combustion stable.

(2) Check that combustion of oil-fired burners is very stable.
(3) To control primary air flow by manual operation.
(4) Stop coal feeder, shut off outlet valve of coal feeder.
(5) Reduce primary air flow gradually to allowable min flow.
(6) Monitor the outlet temperature of separator,to make the temperature
stabilized at normal value by manual operation.
(7) After stop coal feeder 10min, shut off primary air valve.
(8) Shut off main motor on coal mill,start the slow drive motor.
(9) Start steam deactivation system(last out 3min)
(10) Shut off coal dust check valve.
(11) After other burners used to be inspected which can make combustion
stabilized, shut off oil-fired burners while stop coal mill.
9.2 Completely drain away(by deactivation system)
(1) Shut off coal dust burners,oil-fired burner are used for combustion, its
load should be sufficient to make combustion stabilized.
(2) Check that combustion of oil-fired burners is stable.
(3) Control the primary air flow by manual operation.
(4) Stop coal feeder, shut off outlet valve of coal feeder.
(5) Close hot air retaining plate and open steam valve.
(6) After stop coal feeding 30min, close steam valve and primary air valve.
(7) Stop main motor of coal mill
(8) Stop sealed air fan.
(9) Close coal dust check valve.
(10) After other burners used to be inspected which can make combustion
stabilized, shut off oil-fired burners while stop coal mill.

9.3 Symptom without coal in coal mill
After confirmed to stop by following observation,drain away coal mill.
(1) Very low coal level is detected by coal level control system.
(2) High noise level.
(3) Temperature difference between coal mill inlet and separator outlet
toboggans.
9.4 Symptom of coal mill overload
(1) Very high coal level is detected by coal level control system.
(2) Very low noise level.
(3) Very high pressure drop of coal mill.
(4) Absorbed power is increased.
