Project Goals:

The concept is ‘kids clothes as art,’ and art needs a frame, so the grid is an evolution of that idea. The
store includes an airy, contemporary design that beautifully showcases the clothing and accessories.
The store’s grid allows for ultimate flexibility in showcasing the brands exclusive to Uptown Kids.
The Goldmans also wanted a children’s playroom area, which we designed with yellow Plexiglas
walls so that parents can keep an eye on their kids enjoying some playtime.

Architectural Concept:

The Uptown Kids logo looks like a subway map, and it is designed to take kids and parents to a fun,
colorful place they’ve never seen before. “We wanted to be a destination where parents and
grandparents could find exceptional clothing, strollers, and educational toys,” said Carolyn Goldman.
“But we are also making Uptown Kids a place for fashion shows, seminars for new moms, a concert
series for kids, and a fabulous area for kids to play while the grownups shop in peace!” Uptown Kids
is also exclusively carrying the abstract art of former OSU Cowboy and 10-year NBA veteran guard
Desmond Mason.

From the architect. The store has all the hallmarks of a minimalist Nendo design. This
functional space is inspired by an art installation, in which the shoes are definitely the main
focus.

"We've created a new concept for large Camper stores based on the idea that "the shoes are
walking on air". This is an idea that had been developed for smaller Camper stores in places
like Osaka, Paris, San Francisco and Moscow. When designing such a big space you have to
face the challenge of how to use the upper half of the walls to display the shoes in areas with
such high ceilings. Our new approach involves making white resin models of the Pelotas
shoe, one of Camper’s most iconic styles, and decorating the walls with them to fill the space
and create the feel of an orderly stockroom." NENDO

Over a 1000 replicas have been used to fill up the space There is also a special area for the
brand's first socks and bags collection. The bags collection has been created in collaboration
with Dai Fujiwara (ex creative director of Issey Miyake).

From the architect. The cafe is located on the ground floor of a newly opened commercial
facility connected to Shinjuku Station. We intend to create a fair relationship between all
people present: “hosts” and “guests” mixing with each other, people waiting in line; seated
and standing customers; staff working at the casher; ballista brewing coffee inside the counter
and more.

First, we carefully adjusted details to suit everybody’s eye level at the same height, and then
placed a hollow-square counter in the center, where multiple layers of people overlap each
other. Furniture height is set below the waist height to keep out of sight; and floor and ceiling
are finished with the same material as the common area to erase the boundary between the
shop and the common area, allowing the space to extend beyond to create a cafe that serves
the entire facility.

The new Blue Bottle Coffee counter stands here in the light-filled urban square.

From the architect. Café Murasaki initiated by the client’s proposal, which planed to
renovate a pair of row houses to be the café. In the beginning, the functions are not specific.
Then, the first idea started from a loca-on that standing on the suburban area of Bangkok, due
to the reason of hard access. Each function is created under the idea of flexibility which could
adapt in various usability such as “coffee shop” that provided space for co-working, meeting
or relaxing in the morning, “mini bar” that provide space for recessing or socialize.

Café Murasaki has divided into two areas. The high ceiling area is the common one which
consists of many activities. By the way, steel frame that hanging above the counter is not only
aesthetically designed, it used to represent the usability in the café. In daily hours, the steel
frame is used to hang the menu and glasses, but it has possibilities to transform to place for
lightning installation when the party started. Another remaining area with low ceiling is
proposed to be privacy, space for meeting or enjoying side dish.
