Mall of Asia Arena is an indoor arena within the SM Mall of Asia complex, in Bay

City, Pasay, Philippines. It has a seating capacity of 15,000 for sporting events, and a

full house capacity of 20,000. The Arena officially opened on May 21, 2012. It has

retractable seats and a 2,000-capacity car park building.

CHAPTER II: REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

The Mall of Asia Arena was designed by architecture firm Arquitectonica. The

facility was intended primarily as a venue for concert and basketball games but can be

reconfigured to accommodate other sporting and entertainment events as well.[16] It has

a seating capacity of 15,000 but can host as much as 20,000 people in a full-house

capacity.

The indoor arena stands on a 16,000 m2 (170,000 sq ft) had a floor area of

52,000 m2 (560,000 sq ft). The limited area of the site meant that part of the building to

span over an adjacent road. Due to a high water table, the construction of basement

parking levels was limited and a separate eight-storey parking building which can

accommodate 1,400 vehicles had to be built. The facade of the building are covered with

low-e coated and fritted insulated glass units. The structure hosting the events space

was designed in a form of an eye which was supported by a slanted podium plinth.

The indoor arena hosts the Premiere Suites which is reportedly the first luxury

box in Southeast Asia. The luxury box has a total of 41 suites. A private restaurant, the

Premiere Café + Lounge, serves patrons of the luxury box.

The Manila Major, also known as the Spring Major, was a professional Dota 2

eSport tournament that took place in Manila, Philippines. 16 teams from different

countries compete for 3 million dollars prize pool.

the Philadelphia Sports Complex. Adjacent to Xfinity Live!, the first-of-its-kind venue will

seat up to 3,500 guests and stand as the largest new-construction, purpose-built esports

franchise, is one of 20 international teams competing in the Overwatch League. In

addition to serving as a premiere destination for competitive gaming events, Fusion

Arena will also host a variety of live entertainment programming and experiences.

Eliciting the venue’s first wow is the arena’s exterior, a sleek and dynamic skin

that draws inspiration from the hardware powering esports’ meteoric rise around the

globe. The incorporation of industrial materials throughout Fusion Arena’s design pays

tribute to Philadelphia’s heritage as the “workshop of the world.” A captivating 6,000-

square feet of interactive media surface hovering 30 feet above them.

Arena in Chongqing, western China, has curtain glass walls lined by transparent

LED screens that turn the entire building into an enormous video display for those

unable to get a seat inside.

A new stadium has risen on a bank of the Yangtze River in southwestern China’s

Chongqing municipality, but inside you won’t find basketball players, footballers or

swimmers. Instead? Video gamers. This is the world’s first purpose-built e-sports

stadium – and it was designed by Hong Kong architect Barrie Ho.

“The number of people watching e-sports online is higher than the number

watching the NBA,” says Ho, whose firm designed Chongqing’s Zhongxian E-Sports

Stadium, phase one of which was completed at the end of last year. “Everybody thinks

e-sports is about two people playing a game online. It’s not like that. It’s like a carnival.”

It’s even more than that: it’s a phenomenon. Market tracking company Newzoo

projects that 427 million people will be watching competitive video gaming next year.

Last year’s most-watched e-sports event, the Intel Extreme Masters in Katowice, Poland,

drew 46 million viewers. E-sports are even being considered for inclusion in the 2020

Tokyo Olympics.

Stadiums around the world are already being used for massive e-sport events. In

2014, more than 45,000 fans crowded into Seoul’s World Cup Stadium to watch the

League of Legends World Championship. Last summer, each of the nearly 20,000 seats

in Toronto’s Air Canada Centre were sold out for three days of competitions.

Video game company Blizzard Entertainment has already opened dedicated e-

sports halls in Taipei and Los Angeles. But the 60,000-square-foot Zhongxian stadium,

which is slated to be fully completed by the middle of this year, is the first fully fledged

stadium dedicated entirely to professional video gaming.

30 | P a g e

CHAPTER II: REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Two wing-shaped halls extend out from an arena with the capacity to seat 7,000

people. Ho says the wings are based on an inverse yin-yang symbol. “I wanted a design

that reflects the energy of these events,” he says. The design also serves a more

utilitarian purpose. Because of the festival atmosphere of e-sports events, the stadium

needed lots of flexible space for fans to gather. Along with an outdoor plaza, the wings

can accommodate an additional 13,000 people on top of those seated in the arena.

Even those standing outside won’t miss a thing. The stadium’s curtain glass walls

are lined by transparent LED screens that turn the entire building into an enormous

video display. “The whole facade is really a screen,” says Rex Cheuk, one of the

project’s architects. It’s those screens that separate an e-sports stadium from a

traditional one. While the Jumbotron might be a fixture at many sports arena, it is

essentially a vehicle for secondary information such as scores and times. In an e-sports

stadium, there is nothing to watch but the screen; athletes are sat in their chairs, virtually

motionless. Zhongxian’s arena is centered around huge screens hanging above the

centre of the space.

Construction of the stadium was almost as fast as the gameplay it will host.

Designed just over a year ago, construction started in May and the venue’s first event

took place in December. Workers will now move on to the project’s second phase, which

includes a 64,000 sq ft luxury hotel tower and an 80,000 sq ft incubation centre. China’s

600 million gamers account for about a quarter of the world’s US$101 billion video game

market. Ho says the incubation centre will serve as a breeding ground for new industry

talent.

Expect the rest of the world to soon catch up, however. Last year, designer Brian

Mirakian, an expert in immersive fan experiences, said that new stadiums will almost

certainly be designed with e-sports in mind. ‘Constraint is the mother of art’: Tokyo 2020

stadium designer Kengo Kuma tells Hong Kong architects to make most of concrete

jungle. “We see this as an incredible opportunity emerging,” he told real estate blog

Curbed. “There’s an incredibly passionate online community, but there’s an amazing

passion for fans to be together.”

CHAPTER II: REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

The city of South Bend is looking to be the first city in Indiana to have a

dedicated esports arena by converting an old theatre into a 500-seat arena.

The 700-seat Bendix Theatre would be converted into an esports arena thanks to

$2 million in bed tax collections from the St. Joseph County hotel-motel tax board. It

would be used to host local and regional esports tournaments, according to a Century

Center concept presentation. Jeff Jarnecke, executive director of South Bend’s venues,

told local media that work could get underway as soon as next year.

The proposed redesign would have three phases. The first would be upgrades in

utilities and infrastructure, plus IT upgrades with screens and lighting for equipment and

technological needs. The physical space and furnishings would be implemented during

the first phase as well. The proposed design would have multiple video boards, plus a

team gaming floor, backstage entry area and ribbon video board.

The second phase would include a support space redesign with team rooms and

offices plus locker rooms and dressing rooms, as well as production studios for the event

and broadcasts. The third and final phase would be a gaming village being set up with

lounges and social spaces, a drone racing course and retail store, plus food and

beverage options and a pre-function gamer gallery.

2.4 Synthesis

The related literatures aided the researcher in enhancing her concept and

incorporating viable innovations in her proposed Business Park. Through the

comparative analysis, she was able to synthesize viable inventive ideas from the

following foreign and local researches and studies.

Foreign Researches

The ESports Stadium in Arlington, The Gaming Stadium in Richmond, British

Columbia Canada, HyperX ESports Arena in Las Vegas and the proposed project

promise quality infrastructure and support facilities for innovation and technology

development. They promise dedicated ESports facility that will accommodate weekly

meet-ups, local and international competitive tournaments, and other events further

enrich the community experience, giving gamers from multiple communities touching

points at the Stadium. . The facility serves as a turnkey solution for esports events and

productions, built to serve the unique needs and demands of the esports community.

However, the proposed project varies in terms of infrastructure. It also provides institute

or simply a learning environment for Filipino animators and game developers like the

Maya Academy of Advanced Cinematics. The Academy and the proposal both provides

quality facilities used for quality education in animation, visual effects, gaming,

filmmaking, multimedia, web design, and graphic design.

Local Researches

Highgrounds Café of TNC is related to the proposed project in terms of hosting

competitive tournaments, providing gaming facilities such as team training rooms, live

spectating venue, etc. However, the proposal hosts both local and international

tournaments and provides rooms for rent accommodating players who needs a place to

stay during the event. SMX Convention Center and Mall of Asia Arena both hosts major

and minor tournaments, local and international. They are both related to the proposal in

terms of providing facility accommodating such events like competitive tournaments, etc.

Foreign Studies
