1 TITLE
HD3 Master Compatibility Matrix

2 PURPOSE
To provide reference information for determining acceptable board/assembly part
number/revision levels for use in all areas of the Service organization. To be effective,
this document must be maintained in a timely manner as outlined in the following
sections.

3 DEFINITIONS
• EC (Engineering Change)/CN (Change Notice): The document that officially releases a
change to a PCB/Assembly. This document contains details of the change: effectivity
dates, compatibility, etc. The EC/CN is the controlling document should any question
arise regarding the information contained in the matrix.
• N/A: Not applicable
• PAL: Phase Alternation by line (CCIR color video standard).
• PCB or Board: Printed circuit board; a complete board assembly.
• Software: Refers to the system disk version.
• OS: Operating system.
• COTS: Commercial off the shelf; pertains to software drivers or software patches.
• FSE: Field Service Engineer; Engineers in the field who maintain and repair systems.
• PDM: Product Data Master; the master configuration and change tool (database).
• Rev: The PCB/Assembly Revision or Date Code (DC), whichever is applicable.
Revisions are alphabetical, Date Codes are numerical. The code is deciphered as
shown in this example:
o Date Code: 4225.
o “42” is used to determine the year of manufacture. Add this number to “1960” to
determine the actual year.
o “25” is denotes the week of manufacture.
• * (asterisk): An asterisk is used within the matrix to abbreviate long part numbers. It is
an abbreviation for the digits not written. The abbreviation is used for any reference to a
long part number in the HARDWARE COMMENTS or NOTES columns. Examples:
o Part number M2540-64000, would be written as “*64000”.
o Part number 453561189051 would be written as “*189051”.

4 GENERAL
The matrix shall contain the following:
• A listing of all the PCBs and Assemblies that could be encountered in the field.
• Information relating to the change: CN number, approximate date in production, and a
brief description of the change.
• Information for the acceptability of a given part number/revision level for use in the field,
shipment from Stores, upgradeability, and backward compatibility.
• Data on PCB, Assembly, or Software compatibility in a comprehensive format.
• A format that can be used by all Service departments.
• A format that can be used for field documentation, either directly or with a minimum of
modification.

5 DISTRIBUTION
• The Documentation Center is responsible for maintaining the distribution list.
• The matrix is intended to serve the purposes of Repair Services and the FSE’s.
Personnel from other departments may be placed on the distribution list at the
discretion of the Service Engineering Manager.

• The matrix shall be distributed to the people on the designated distribution list.
• Updates to the Matrix may be distributed within one week of CN sign-off.

6 LAYOUT AND MAINTENANCE

• The matrix shall reflect current and accurate information.
• The Upgrade Engineering department is responsible for maintaining the matrix.
• Each page shall be identified with a page number, document number, revision letter,
and revision date.
• A revision record shall be maintained and distributed with each change, space allowing.
The master revision history will be maintained in the current PDM.
• The matrix is laid out in sections as follows:
o E-Box Boards - Shows the items used within the E-Box assembly and their
compatibility to the various software versions
o Other Boards and Assemblies - Shows the items used in the remainder of the
system that are not part of the E-box and their compatibility to the various
software versions.
o PC Boards and Assemblies – Shows the items used in the PC of the system
and their compatibility to various PC assemblies.
o Software - Shows the various software levels and their compatibility.

7 USING THE HD3 MASTER COMPATIBILITY MATRIX

Each page in the matrix shall have the headings listed below. The significance of each
heading is explained.
• PCB/ASSEMBLY NAME: The proper noun name of the PCB or Assembly.
• PART NUMBER: Base number of the PCB or Assembly. In those instances where the
manufacturer’s part number is of importance, it will be shown in parentheses, unless it
is too long to fit in this column. In the instances where it is too long, it will be shown in
the “HARDWARE COMMENTS” column in parentheses.
• HARDWARE COMMENTS: This column shows the CN number that caused the part
number/revision change, the approximate date that it was first produced, and a brief
explanation of the nature of the change. The CN should be consulted for details. The
"(M)" or "(NM)" indication after the CN date indicates that the change was either
"Mandatory" or "Not Mandatory". In the instances where the manufacturer’s part
number is long (too long to fit in the “PART NUMBER” column, it will be shown in this
column in parentheses.
• FWD UPGRADE: A "Y" in this column indicates that this PCB/Assembly part
number/revision is upgradeable to another part number/revision. A "-" indicates that this
is not possible or that it is the last entry in a group since there is no subsequent part
number/revision. If a PCB/Assembly is forward upgradeable, but not to the next
sequential part number/revision, the forward upgradeability is indicated by showing "Y"
in the FWD UPGRADE" column and the upgrade information is shown in the "NOTES"
column.
• BACK COMP: An "X" in this column indicates that this part number/revision is backward
compatible to the previous part number/revision. A blank indicates that this part
number/revision is the initial release and there is no previous part number/revision to be
compatible with. If the part number is backward compatible, but not to the preceding
part number, the backward compatibility is indicated by showing a “Y” in the “BACK
COMP” column and the backward compatibility information is shown in the “NOTES”
column.
• CURRENT: An "X" in this column indicates that the PCB/Assembly is preferred for
shipment in new systems. A blank indicates that it is not preferred for shipment in new
systems.

• SHOP: An "X" in this column indicates that this PCB/Assembly part number/revision
may be shipped from Repair Services.
• NOTES: This column contains any pertinent notes or compatibility information.
• SOFTWARE: This column shows all software versions. An "X" in a column indicates
that the PCB/Assembly on that line is compatible, with that software version, when it
meets any conditions shown in the “NOTES” column. A blank in a column indicates that
the PCB/Assembly is not compatible with that software version. Note that software
loaded and shipped on PCs by the Service Shop is test software.
