SUBJECT: COOLANT SPECIFICATION TO BE USED WITH PERKINS 1300 SERIES

ENGINES

PROBLEM

Currently generator sets powered by Perkins 1300 series engines are shipped filled with
Extended Life Coolant (ELC).

The Perkins 1300 series engine is currently fitted with a coolant conditioner filter containing
Supplementary Coolant Additives (SCA).

In order to extend the life of cooling system components, ELC should be used without the
presence of additional SCA.

As an interim measure, whenever ELC coolant is used, the coolant flow to the conditioner filter
should be turned off.

PROCEDURE

Stopping coolant flow to the coolant conditioner filter

1. Follow instructions in FG Wilson Health and Safety handbook.

2. Ensure the machine is cool and isolated from starting, remove the radiator cap to release system
pressure.
3. The coolant conditioner filter and isolation valve are located on the right hand side of the timing
case, as shown below:

4. Before work, the valve should be in the open position allowing coolant flow as shown in B2.
5. Turn the lever on the isolation valve fully anti-clockwise to stop coolant flow to the filter as shown
in B1.
6. Check the coolant level per the user handbook and replace the radiator cap.

FG Wilson are working to make a revised filter that does not contain SCA. Another TIB will
advise the new part number and how to use.
