Summative Evaluation

I. Instructional Objectives

Objective (Cognitive Domain):

After hearing uppercase letters out of order, the prekindergarten students will correctly identify

21 out of 26 uppercase letters.

II. Assessment Description

An authentic assessment was done during the create portion of the lessons. This

authentic assessment had the students taking pictures of their playdough or sand letters. A rubric

was included on the website. The results of this rubric are summarized in the additional data

section of this evaluation. Two summative assessments were given after all uppercase letters

were taught. The first summative assessment was an online multiple-choice quiz of all

uppercase letters out of order on Quizizz. For each question, an audio recording told a letter.

The students selected the correct letter. The second summative assessment was a fill in the blank

quiz on alphabetical order on Edcite. There were five questions where the students had to put the

letters in alphabetical order.

Student 4 6 6 6 8 25 98%

IV. Analysis of Data

The first quiz consisted of 26 multiple choice questions. Each question had a voice

recording saying the letter. All the students did well on the first quiz. The highest score was

100%, and the lowest score was 92%. The mean of the scores was 96%. No two students

missed the same question. The second quiz consisted of five short answer questions. The first
4

three questions had six letters to put in order. The fourth question had eight letters to put in

order. The fifth question had all 26 letters to put in order. The students did well on the quiz.

The highest score was 100%, and the lowest score was 90%. The mean of the scores was 95%.

No two students missed the same letter sequence. The students’ uppercase letter recognition

improved greatly after taking this unit. Before the unit, all four students knew less than ten

letters. After the unit, two students know all 26 uppercase letters, and two students know 24

uppercase letters.

V. Field Notes

This unit was meant to be given in my classroom where I could observe the students

while they complete it. Due to the shelter in place order, I had to rely on parents to allow the

four students to complete the unit activities and assessments. Three of the students completed

the assignments on time every day. One student fell behind on the assignments but finished

them all by the end of the 10th day. After they were finished with the unit, I had them complete a

short survey to let me know how the completion of the unit went. All the students found it fun

and average in difficulty. They all said that the lessons helped them learn their letters. Their

favorite parts of the unit were the letter songs, ABC Mouse activities, and the playdough letters.

One student said that her least favorite part was writing the letters. They all agreed that they had

enough time to complete the quizzes. The assignments took between 15 to 45 minutes to

complete; depending on the letter. The students said that they would not change anything.

Peer Reviewer Comments:
Jessica’s online module looks great! I appreciate the ease of it, as a Kindergarten teacher. It seems like students could easily
navigate through the module with an introductory lesson, which she provided on her homepage. I enjoyed the age-appropriate
resources, from a wide variety of places. I think her learns will have no problem mastering the skills of their uppercase letters
after completing!

The students did well at forming each of the letters. Most of the letters created were rated

as advanced or proficient. Only five letters were rated in progress, and no letters were rated not

yet. The letters that were rated in progress looked too much like other letters. For example, a D

looked like an O.

Great unit. It was easy to follow and interesting. All of the links worked and were appropriate for the material. The discussion question on
Flipgrid only allows you to record. You cannot write a paragraph. My main suggestion would be to add a link for Google Classroom. I like the
mixture of multiple choice, word problems, and fill in the blank questions on the assessments.
