Planning for Learning in Mathematics or Science:

A Learning Experience Planner
Learning Area: Mathematics (Transformation)

Year level: Year 5/6 (28 students)

Topic: Transformation (Translation, Reflection and Rotation)

1. The learning focus of the Learning Experience

What are the key mathematics/science concepts being developed?
• Identifying effects of transformation on 2D shapes
• Understanding that translations, reflections and rotations can change the position and orientation but not
shape or size
What are the key aspects of thinking and working mathematically/scientifically being developed?
▪ Use of manipulatives to identify transformation
▪ Use of Mathematical terms to describe transformation

What are the key manipulative / algorithmic skills being developed?

▪ Use attribute blocks to identify effects of transformation
▪ Understand how to translate, reflect and rotate shapes
2. Description of the learning experience

Teacher Activity Learner organisation & Time

resources
Introducing the experience (engagement).
- Introduce students to the topic and learning intentions + 3 post it notes for each 7-10 minutes
success criteria. student

- Hand out three post it notes to each student

- Students will individually write down the definitions for

translation, reflection and rotation (this will inform their prior
knowledge).

- Encourage students to share their responses. As a class, discuss.

Key questions that may be asked in the introduction to engage learners or to challenge their ideas:

- What do you observe about the size of the shapes when it is translated?
- What about their position and orientation? (all except translation will have a different orientation)

Developing the experience.

Transformation 25-30 minutes
- Go through each type of transformation on the PowerPoint PowerPoint slides
slide giving examples. Whilst explaining, demonstrate some
examples on the whiteboard. Transformation worksheet

Attribute blocks
- Demonstrate using hands. Encourage students to do the same.
Extension worksheet
- Play a short round of Simon says with hands (transformation on
Cartesian plane)
- Students will complete a worksheet where they will draw the
effect of translation, reflection and rotation

- Students will use attribute blocks to do three patterns

(reflection, translation and rotation) without stating which is
which. Peer will try to work out which one is which.

Extension: transformation on Cartesian plane worksheet

(students have recently learnt how to plot coordinates on the
Cartesian Plane)

Key questions that may be asked to engage learners or to challenge their ideas:

- How is transformation relevant in the real-world setting?

Closing the experience.

7-10 minutes
https://www.youtube.com
- Ask three students in the class to come up and demonstrate /watch?v=0Z1aUhGCZs0
one example of reflection/translation/rotation

- Discuss the relevance of this topic in real world setting

- Wrap up learning experience with video of Transformation

Math Song

3. The learning experience that may follow would focus on the following:

- More hands-on/digital experiences with translation, reflection and rotation. This will be followed by introducing
enlargement to students.
