MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY
MODULE NO. 1

I. INTRODUCTION

In this day and age, most of us have already been exposed to technologies we could not think of ten
or twenty years ago. Along with that development came a new way of how we retrieve and access
information. The new technologies developed did not only make it easier to retrieve information but also to
give out information which made it more convenient for us. Gone are the days where we will wait for the
newspapers and delayed television broadcasts for current events. Information can easily be accessed with
the tip of our fingers which resulted to us being lazy in seeking out more information by fact checking. By
the end of this course you are expected to be responsible users of media.

II. OBJECTIVE/COMPETENCY
As a student, you are expected to:
 describe how communication is affected by media and information

III. PRELIMINARIES

Information Media

1. It is the physical objects used to communicate with, or the mass communication through physical
objects such as radio, television, computers, film, etc. It also refers to any physical object used to
communicate messages

2. It is a broad term that covers processed data, knowledge derived from study, experience,
instruction, signals or symbols

1. You are a 21st Century learner, where most are dependent on technology. Imagine waking up one
day to find no internet, libraries, and cellphones. Newspapers, magazines, radio stations, and TV
have also disappeared.
 How would you be informed of anything now?
 In what ways would you communicate with one another?
 How would you share information and communicate news and events?
 How would it affect the way you live?
 What would society lose in this situation?
