What I Need to Know

This module will help you understand and appreciate our folk music to
strengthen your cultural identity as Filipino. You will be introduced to various
folk music and expected to have fun in multiple listening activities. You will
also do simple musical score analysis focusing on Folksongs of the Lowland
Luzon.

After going through this module, you are expected to describe the
musical characteristics of representative music selections from the lowlands
of Luzon after listening (MU7LU-la-1);

Specifically, you will be able to:

1. identify the musical characteristics of Lowland Luzon folksongs;


2. differentiate liturgy and devotional music from secular music; and
3. write the importance of music in people’s daily activities.

putting them to sleep? How about your grandfather? Does he sing while he
works?

Some of these songs that you have heard are called Folksongs. In this
lesson, you will be learning the Folksongs of the lowland Luzon.

What is It

Folk songs are songs written by the folk and are sung while doing
daily activities such as farming, fishing, and putting the baby to sleep. These
are traditionally passed on orally. Most Philippine folk songs have Spanish
and Western influences.

The people create melodic chants and indigenous instruments based


on the materials available where they live.

Characteristics of folk songs are as follows:

1. Originally passed down orally to the family and to the other


members of the community.
2. Learned through rote or listening.
3. Sung in his/her own dialect.
4. Begins in one key and ends in the same key.
5. Composers and lyricists are usually unknown.
6. Mood can be sentimental, playful, and humorous.
7. Concepts are based on nature or people’s work, tradition, and
culture.

Liturgical and Devotional music are religious music of Luzon that
reveal the impact of Spanish colonization to the Philippines which lasted for
almost three centuries. The different Western forms of music that are used for
religious rites came with the introduction of Christianity. Some of these were
adapted by Filipino musicians to suit Philippine culture and tradition.

Some examples of Liturgical and Devotional music are:

Secular music refers to any music that is not religious in nature. Some
examples are:
