1OPENING BILLBOARD

2MUSIC UP FOR 3 SECONDS AND FADE UNDER

3HOST: Good afternoon Grade 11 learners!

4 I am Teacher Marvin of Francisco L. Adlaon High School,

5 Broadcasting live at 103.9 DYDL FM Radio Station,

6 And this is your school-on-the-air!

7MUSIC UP FOR 3 SECONDS AND FADE UNDER

8HOST: Time check it’s 3 minutes after 5 o’clock in the afternoon,

and were gonna be together until 6 in the evening.

9 So seat back, relax, focus, and enjoy learning.

10MUSIC UP FOR 3 SECONDS AND FADE UNDER

11HOST: But before we’ll start, make sure that you are in your comfortable seat

12 right now and you can clearly hear our broadcast;

13MUSIC UP FOR 3 SECONDS AND FADE UNDER

14 With your Learning Activity Sheet in General Mathematics for Week 2;

15MUSIC UP FOR 3 SECONDS AND FADE UNDER

16 your writing materials;

17MUSIC UP FOR 3 SECONDS AND FADE UNDER

18 and a heart and mind full of excitement. Are you guys ready? [PAUSE]

19 Great!

20MUSIC UP FOR 5 SECONDS AND FADE UNDER.

21 Now, let me ask you a few questions.

22 What was our lesson in General Mathematics last week? [PAUSE]

23[sound effect - correct] That’s right! It is all about Relations and Functions.

24
25HOST: A relation is any set of ordered pairs such as x and y, where x is called

26 the domain (or the set of input values), and y is called the range (or the

27 set of output values).

28 Just like a coffee vending machine, can you tell which is the input and

29 which one is the output? [PAUSE]

30[sound effect - correct] Great! The input is the 5-peso coin and the output is a cup

31of coffee. [clap effects]

32 So how do we know if a relation is a function? [PAUSE]

33 [sound effect - correct] Very good! A relation is a function if and only if

34 each element in the domain corresponds to exactly one element in the

35 range.

36MUSIC UP FOR 3 SECONDS AND FADE UNDER

37HOST: (Example 1) Now can you tell whether a relation between learners and

38 their Learner Reference Number (or LRN) is a function or not? [PAUSE]

39 [sound effect - correct] Correct! It is a function… since each learner

40 (the domain) corresponds to exactly one or unique Learner Reference

41 Number (or LRN) (which is the range). This type of correspondence is

42 called one-to-one. [sound effect - clap]

43HOST: (Example 2) How about a relation between a person to his or her

44 citizenship? Is it a function or not? [PAUSE]

45 [sound effect - correct] Very good! It is a not a function… since a person

46 can be legally recognized as a citizen of two countries at the same time – this

47 called a dual citizenship. This type of correspondence is called one-to-

48 many. [sound effect - clap]

49HOST: (Example 3) How about a relation between True or False questions to

50 answers? Is it a function or not? [PAUSE]

51 [sound effect - correct] Perfect! It is a function… since each question

52 (the domain) corresponds to exactly one answer -- either True or False

53 (which is the range). This type of correspondence is called many-to-one

54 since two or more questions can have the same answer

55 [sound effect - clap]

56HOST: Therefore, both one-to-one and many-to-one correspondence are

57 functions (excluding one-to-many).

58MUSIC UP FOR 3 SECONDS AND FADE UNDER

59HOST: Now for this day’s lesson in General Mathematics, you are expected to

60 distinguish rational functions, rational equations, and rational

61 inequalities.

62MUSIC UP FOR 2 SECONDS AND FADE UNDER

63HOST: In your paper or notebook, write the following mathematical statements.

x+2 1 2x 2x
64 First is = , second, > 0, third is y=
5 2 3 x−5

65 Considering these mathematical statements,

66 Can you tell their similarities? [PAUSE]

67[sound effect - correct] Good! They all have polynomial expressions which consist

68 of variables and coefficients. Another?

69[sound effect - correct] That’s right! They are all in fraction form.

70 How about their differences? [PAUSE]

71[sound effect - correct] Great! They have different relational symbols. The first and

72 the third statements have ‘equal’ signs, while the second one has a

73 ‘greater than’ sign.

x+2 1
74HOST: Now can you tell me, what makes the first equation ( = ) and the
5 2

2x
75 third equation ( y= ) significantly different? [PAUSE]
x−5

x+2 1
76[sound effect – correct] Impressive! The first equation = has only one
5 2

77 variable x, while the third equation has two variables –> x and y.

78[sound effect- clap] You got it right!

2x
79 Now what do you call this mathematical statement y= ? [PAUSE]
x−5

80[sound effect – correct] That’s right! It is a rational function.

81HOST: A rational function is a function of the form y or 𝒇(𝒙) = 𝒑(𝒙)/𝒒(𝒙) where

82 𝒑(𝒙) and 𝒒(𝒙) are polynomial functions and 𝑞(𝑥) is not the zero function

83 (i.e., 𝑞(𝑥) ≢ 0). A rational function expresses relationship between two

84 variables (such as x and y).

85 A rational expression is an expression that can be written as a ratio of

86 two polynomials.

87MUSIC UP FOR 3 SECONDS AND FADE UNDER

88HOST: An equation involving rational expressions is called a rational equation.

x+2 1
89 Example: ( = )
5 2

90MUSIC UP FOR 3 SECONDS AND FADE UNDER

91HOST: On the other hand, An inequality involving rational expressions is called

2x
92 a rational inequality. Example: ( > 0)
3
93MUSIC UP FOR 5 SECONDS AND FADE UNDER

94HOST: So to sum up, if an equation involves rational expressions, it is called a

95 rational equation. If an inequality involves rational expressions, it is

96 called a rational inequality. And last, but not the least, a rational

97 function is a ratio of two polynomial functions, where the denominator

98 is not a zero function.

99MUSIC UP FOR 5 SECONDS AND FADE UNDER

100HOST: This time, let us try to check if you listened attentively from our

101 discussion. In your learning activity sheet for week 2, day 1, exercise 2,

102 determine whether the given is a rational function, a rational equation,

103 a rational inequality or none of these.

104MUSIC UP FOR 3 SECONDS AND FADE UNDER

105HOST: Let us try to check your answers for the odd numbered items

106 (1, 3, 5, & 7)

107
None of these Rational equation
108

109

110
None of these Rational inequality
111

112

113[sound effect- clap]

114MUSIC UP FOR 3 SECONDS AND FADE UNDER

115HOST: Now it’s your turn to answer the even numbered items.

116 But before I leave, let me end our session with a quote from Jack

117 London. He said: “The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I

118 shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.”

119 I hope you learned something this afternoon.

120 Thank you for listening and God bless everyone!
