MODULE 2 – DIMENSIONS OF SUPERVISION

1. Assess your former (most recent) supervisor in terms of the three (3) dimensions of supervision discussed in this
module. Include both favourable and unfavourable practices/traits of that supervisor. Now as a supervisor (or as a
future supervisor) yourself, identify one (1) practice/trait in each dimension that you shall you emulate and
explain why. Similarly, identify one (1) practice/trait in each dimension that you would rather not emulate and
explain why?

A. Supervisor’s favourable and unfavourable practices or traits

CURRICULAR DIMENSION

FACTOR TO EMULATE - ENSURING CURRICULUM QUALITY AND APPLICABILITY

Being a curriculum leader entails one to ensure that the curriculum is of good quality and is applicable to the
needs of the students. It is the quality of the curriculum that determines the quality of learning and outputs that
students gain from instruction. If the curriculum is well-crafted and appropriate, then the outcomes and products will
surely become successful. On the other hand, if the curriculum is poorly designed for students, then student learning
will be sacrificed as the outcomes would turn out to be poor.

FACTOR NOT TO EMULATE – AUTORITARIAN CONTROL AND LAISSEZ-FAIRE APPROACH

As a future supervisor, I would not be an authoritative figure to my teachers especially in the strict compliance
of some parts of the prescribed curriculum which are not appropriate for our students. I believe that teachers should
be given the privilege to determine which topics in the curriculum need revision to appropriate the level and context
of learning of the students. This, however, does not mean that teachers have the absolute power to determine the best
curriculum to implement inside the classroom. The curriculum prescribed by the DepEd must still be followed. Any
modifications made should be based on the existing curriculum and must address specific needs of students in a
school context.

HUMAN RELATIONS DIMENSION

FACTOR TO EMULATE – ENCOURAGES MUTUAL TRUST AND RESPECT

In any organization, having mutual trust and respect is the key towards good organizational climate. The
workplace becomes ideal for every employee because he/she is surrounded by people who could work along with
him/her.

FACTOR NOT TO EMULATE – RELUCTANCE TO TRAIN OR TO INVEST IN TRAINING

Training employees for professional development purposes is a good investment. If employees are properly
trained, their work performance and efficiency increases. The clients will be satisfied with the services that they gain
in the school.

ADMINISTRATIVE DIMENSION

FACTOR TO EMULATE - ESTABLISH EDUCATIONAL STANDARDS AS WELL AS POLICIES AND

PROCEDURES TO CARRY THEM OUT

Basically, one of the principal’s main duties is to establish educational standards as well as policies and
procedures for the school to carry out. Directives coming from the principal would guide the teachers and staff as to
what relevant tasks should be accomplished at a specified time.

FACTOR NOT TO EMULATE – NEGOTIATING WITH FACULTY ASSOCIATIONS

As a supervisor, I should stay neutral as possible especially in terms of negotiating with faculty associations. The
faculty officers shall decide on their own policies and decisions with the consensus among the members. After all,
the faculty associations are supposed to be managed by the teachers themselves. I could extend help by serving as
their consultant for suggestions and recommendations of the association.
