Remove & Install Fuel Filter & Fuel Filter Base

Fluid Spillage Containment


Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection,
maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid
with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids. Refer to "Tools And Shop Products Guide", NENG2500 for tools and
supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose of fluids
according to local regulations and mandates.

NOTE: The 3408E Engine is equipped with one fuel filter element and the 3412E Engine
is equipped with two fuel filter elements.

1. Disconnect fuel lines (1) and (5). Cap and plug all openings immediately.

2. Remove fuel filter or filters (2) from fuel filter base (4) with Tool (A).

3. Remove two bolts, nuts and washers (3).

4. Remove fuel filter base (4).

5. If necessary, remove the fuel filter mounting stud or studs from the fuel filter base.

NOTE: The following steps are for the installation of the fuel filter or filters and fuel filter
base.

6. If the fuel filter mounting stud or studs were removed from the fuel filter base, reinstall
them. Put 9S-3263 Thread Lock on the tapered end of the stud or studs a distance of 7.6
mm (.30 in). Install the stud or studs in the fuel filter base, and tighten them to a torque of
70 ± 15 N·m (50 ± 11 lb ft).

7. Put fuel filter base (4) in position on the engine, and install two washers, nuts and bolts
(3) that hold it.

8. Connect fuel lines (1) and (5) to the fuel filter base.

9. Install new fuel filter or filters (2). Follow the instructions with the filters for the
installation procedure.
