PREFACE
This document explain about the detail calculation of Lube Oil System. There are 2 main
point calculation in this documement that is main lubricating and cylinder lubricating.
Main lubricating lubricates main bearing, thurs bearing, crosshead, camshaft.cylinder
lubricating lubricates the cylinder of the engine.

A. MAIN LUBRICATING OIL SYSTEM

Main lubricating is the lubrication process for the main bearing, thurs bearing,
crosshead, camshaft. Main lubricating can also cooling the piston because of that in
the system must be a Lube oil cooler. The main componet of main lubricating are LO
sump tank, main LO pump, LO cooler, full flow filter, LO service tank, and purifier.

1 LUBRICATING OIL SPESIFICATION AND CONSUMTION

1.1 ENGINE SPESIFICATION
Type : MAN 7S26MC6
Engine Output : 2800 kW

1.3 MAIN LO CONSUMTION

The endurance of Doris Tanker ship is 5 days or 120 hours. The quantitiy of
lubricating oil needed by ship is 2 times the endurance :

WLO = BHP x SLOC x hours x 1.4 x 10-6

= 2800 x 0.15x 120 x2x 1.4 x 10-6
= 0.14112 ton
Then the volume of LO is
VLO = WHFO/ρ x c
= 0.1/0.89 x 1.4
= 0.222 m3
2 MAIN LO TANKS CALCULATION
2.1 LO STORAGE
In the shipping industry ussulay LO is storage in barrel. Because of that in this
ship LO is storage in barrel.
Vconsumtion = WHFO/ρ x c
= 1.1/0.89 x 1.4
= 0.222 m3
Vservice = 3.90 m3
Vstorage = Vconsumtion + Vservice
= 0.22 +3.9
= 4.12 m3
= 25.9265 ~ 26 bbl

2.2 LO SERVICE TANK

The volume of LO servic tank is same as the volume of LO Sump Tank.
Accroding to the project guide the volume is 3.9 m3
VSERVICE = VSUMP
= 3.9 m3

2.3 LO SUMP TANK
The volume LO Sump Tank accroding to the project guide is 3.9 m3
VSUMP = 3.9 m3

3 MAIN LO PUMP CALCULATION

3.1 HEAD AND CAPACITY
The head and capacity of main lubricating oil pump accroding to the project
guide is 4 bar and 72m3/h
H = 4 bar
= 4 Mpa
Q = 72 m3/h

3.2 PIPE DIAMETER AND SPESIFICATION

2
Q = 0.25 x π x d x v
0.5
d = (Q/(0.25 x π x v)
Where
d = pipe diameter
v = flow velocity
= 1.8 m/s (Recommendation from Project Guide)
Q = capacity
= 72.00 m3/h
= 0.0200 m3/s
Then the pipe diameter is
0.5
d = (Q/(0.25 x π x v)
= 0.10055 m
= 100.55 mm

Accroding to the Table 11.5 about pipe minimum diameter, the thickness group
is N for fuel line passing machinary space . Where in the group N the minimum
diameter is 2.9 mm.
Spesification of pipe according to ANSI

Capacity = 78 m3/h
Head = 4 Mpa
RPM = 1450 rpm
f = 50 Hz
Power = 13 kW
Bore Suc = 100 mm
Bore Dis = 100 mm

4 PURIFIER AND MAIN LO FEED PUMP CALCULATION

4.1 PURIFIER CAPACITY
Based on project guide the recommended for capcity of purifier is 0.136
litre/kWh
Q = BHP [kW]x 0.136[l/kWh]
= 2800 x 0.136
= 380.8 l/h
= 0.3808 m3/h

4.2 PURIFIER SPESIFICATION

Brand = Alfa Laval
Type = P605
max. Q = 0.8 m3/h
Voltage = 220 - 660 V
f = 50 Hz
Power = 1.2 kW

4.3 FEED PUMP SPESIFICATION
Capacity of the Feed Pump is accroding to the capacity of the Purifier. Capacity
of Purifier max is 800 l/h and minimum capacity is 380 l/h based on calculation.
Then the design pressure should be 4 bar and 100°C design temperature.

The spesification of pump are

Brand = Alfa Laval
Type = ALP-0015
Capacity = 0.774 m3/h
Head = 0.4 Mpa
RPM = 1400 rpm
f = 50 Hz
Power = 0.75 kW
Bore Suc = 32 mm
Bore Dis = 32 mm

4.4 PIPE DIAMETER AND SPESIFICATION

From the feed pump spesification the capacity of the pump is 0.8 m3/h and
from project guide the maximum flow velocity is 0.6m/s. The the calulation of
pipe size is :
2
Q = 0.25 x π x d x v
0.5
d = (Q/(0.25 x π x v)
Where
d = pipe diameter
vs = flow velocity
= 1.8 m/s (Recommendation from Project Guide)
Q = capacity
= 0.77 m3/h
= 0.0002 m3/s
Then the pipe diameter is
0.5
d = (Q/(0.25 x π x v)
= 0.010 m
= 10 mm

Thickness = 0.06496 inches 1.65 mm

5 MAIN LO PRE-HEATER CALCULATION

5.1 HEATER CAPACITY
Pre heater is required to increse the temperature of the LO to the facilities that
handling the fuel such as Purifier. Control of the temperature the LO at the
inlet to the centrifuge is critical as the fuel the temperature must not exceed
98°C or the water seal in the conventional purifier will not tobe mainted.
Because of that the fuel temperature in the pre heater will increase from 30°C
to 55°C. The equation for the pre-heater is :

P = Q x ΔT/1700 [kW]
Where,
Q = Capacity of the Purifier feed pump [l/h]
= 774 l/h
ΔT = Temperature different [°C]
= 25 °C
Then the heater capacity is
P = 800 x 25 / 1700
= 11 kW

10.2 HEATER SPESIFICATION

Brand = Alfa Laval
Type = Heatpac EHS-71
Capacity = 14 kW
Max.T = 160 °C
Max.P = 25 bar
