Eight climbers, two of them girls, were swept to their deaths yesterday when an avalanche of ice and snow
thundered down Mount Bloor. It hit the party of two guides and six teenagers shortly after they had made a dawn
start to assault the peak, despite both adverse weather conditions and official warnings. They were swept down
the slopes from a mist-covered mountain ledge, and buried under thousands of tons of debris.

It is not yet known what triggered this avalanche. Severe frost has delayed the rescue operation and the teams
are finding it increasingly hard to reach the disaster site. A rescue worker is quoted as saying that there is no
chance of finding any survivors. He even doubted whether they would be able to find the bodies as three feet of
snow fell during the night. If the bad weather persists, the search for the missing climbers will have to be
abandoned until early spring when the snows begin to melt. Meanwhile, the authorities have requested extra
snowploughs to clear the tracks and free scores of tourists stranded in mountain Villages.

Just two days ago, rescue teams at a nearby resort were alerted when a skier strayed off the piste. When he was
unable to avoid the surging wall of snow, he was buried in the cascade. Sniffer dogs were brought in and his
body, thrown 1,200 feet by the impact, was found under a heap in a ravine. It was dug out, although near-zero
visibility made the rescue operation extremely difficult. Following this tragedy, a warning has been issued to skiers
to keep to established runs and, by no means, to venture onto steep, unmarked slopes. In January alone,
avalanches caused fourteen deaths.

The increase in the number of avalanches is believed to be the result of the widespread deforestation of the
mountain slopes to make way to resorts. The resulting serious erosion of topsoil has substantially multip the
incidence of avalanches and endangered skiers' lives.

10. AVALANSE

Opt alpinisti, două dintre ele fete, au fost loviti de moarte ieri, când o avalanșă de gheață și
zăpadă a cazut pe Muntele Bloor. Aceasta a lovit echipa formata din doi ghizi și șase
adolescenți la scurt timp după ce au început in zori să urce inspre vârf, în ciuda condițiilor
meteorologice nefavorabile și a avertismentelor oficiale. Au fost măturate pe versanții
acoperiti de negura și îngropati sub mii de tone de daramaturi.

Nu se știe încă ce a declanșat această avalanșă. Înghețul sever a întârziat operațiunea de

salvare, iar echipele găsesc din ce în ce mai greu să ajungă la locul dezastrului. Un salvator a
declarat ca nu există nicio șansă de a găsi supraviețuitori. Chiar se îndoia că vor putea să
găsească cadavrele avand in vedere ca au cazut trei metri de zăpadă în timpul nopții. Dacă
vremea rea persistă, căutarea alpinistilor dispăruți va trebui abandonată până la începutul
primăverii, când zăpada începe să se topească. Între timp, autoritățile au solicitat deszăpeziri
suplimentare pentru a curata pistele in ajutorul turiștilor blocați în satele montane.

În urmă cu doar două zile, echipele de salvare dintr-o stațiune din apropiere au fost avertizate
atunci când un schior s-a îndepărtat de pe pârtie. Când nu a putut să evite zidul de zapada
izvorata a fost efectiv îngropat în ea. Câinii dresati au fost aduși și corpul său a fost aruncat de
impact la 1.200 de metri, fiind găsit ulterior sub grămadă de zapada, într-o râpă. A fost
dezgropat, deși vizibilitatea aproape zero a făcut operațiunea de salvare extrem de dificilă. În
urma acestei tragedii, s-a emis un avertisment către schiori pentru a se menține pe traseele
consacrate și, în niciun caz, pentru a se aventura pe pârtii abrupte și nemarcate. Doar în
ianuarie, avalanșele au provocat paisprezece decese.

Creșterea numărului de avalanșe se crede a fi rezultatul defrișărilor răspândite ale versanților

montani pentru a face loc stațiunilor. Eroziunea gravă rezultată a solului de suprafață a
multiplicat substanțial incidența avalanșelor și pune in pericol vietile schiorilor.
