WHAT IS MENTAL HEALTH ?

– Common substitutes : Depression, anxiety, schizophrenia etc.


– Mental health is a state of well being in which every individual realises his or her own
potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and
fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.
– Mental health is about wellness rather than illness
– Alternate terms : Good mental health, positive mental health, mental wellbeing,
subjective wellbeing etc.

MENTAL ILLNESS

– Alternate terms : Mental health conditions, mental health disorders, mental health
problem, mental disorders etc.
– A health problem that significantly affects how a person feels, thinks, behaves, and
interacts with other people
– A group of illness with different types and degrees of severity
– Major types : Depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar mood disorder, personality
disorders, eating disorders

Common symptoms

a. Anxiety : excessive worry or fears


b. Depression : persistent sad or low mood
c. Unusual or illogical thoughts
d. Unreasonable anger or irritability
e. Poor concentration and memory, not being able to follow a conversation
f. Hearing voices which no one else can perceive
g. Increased or decreased sleep
h. Increased or low appetite
i. Lack of motivation
j. Withdrawing from people
k. Feelings thet life is not worth living or more seriously suicidal thoughts.
