Z-Test

Check up:

Test your understanding of the z-test of one population mean. Show your
computation and interpret your answer using the decision rule found at the
start of this module

A teacher of an expensive private school claims that the students

coming from high income families have a higher IQ than the mean IQ of the
general population. In her class of 36 students, she administered an IQ test
and the mean was 106

The norms for the test are µ is 100 and the α or the SD is 15.

Answer:
x̄- 106

µ-100

σ or s- 15

n- 36

Z = (x̄ – μ) / (σ / √n)

Z= (106-100) / (15/ √36)

Z= 6 / (15/6)

Z=6/2.5

Z= 2.4

This is a one tailed hypothesis and willing to allow an error of 0.05 which is
1.65

Interpretation:

The Z value of 2.4 is greater than 1.65. therefore we reject the null
hypothesis. We can say that the students coming from high income families
have a higher IQ than the mean IQ of the general population.
