Exercise 1
Calculate the following
1. By analysis, a compound of sulfur and oxygen was found to have the mass ratio of 2.0 of
sulfur to 3.0 of oxygen.
a. How many grams of oxygen is needed to react with 26 g of sulfur
b. In 60.0 g of the compound, how many grams of oxygen are there? How many sulfur?
c. How many grams of the compound can be obtained from the reaction of 15 g each of
sulfur and oxygen?
2. Nitrogen forms a number of compounds with oxygen. Some of these contribute to air
pollution. In one compound, 4.2 g nitrogen is combined with 2.4 g oxygen. In another
compound, 3.5 g nitrogen is combined with 8.0 g of oxygen. Show that these data are
consistent with the law of multiple proportions.
3. Analysis of a sample of a compound of iron and chlorine gas gave 44.06 %iron and 55.94
% chlorine. Another sample was analyzed to contain31.52 g of iron and 60.03 g of chlorine.
a. Is the second sample the same compound as the first sample? Show your calculation to
support your answer.
b. Could the second sample be another compound of iron and chlorine? Support your
answer with calculation.
