1. The phrase Scientia Potentia Est, which is often attributed to the English philosopher Sir
Francis Bacon, means “Knowledge is Power”. Explain its meaning in the context of science,
technology, and society (STS)? (10 pts)

In the context of Science, the meaning of “Knowledge is Power” is showing that through
knowledge we can adhere or follow the rules by making new experimental ideas and new theories
that are hidden somewhere in this world. Also, In Science we can also gain knowledge just by
simply observing what Is in front of you or what you can truly see with your eyes. Through
observing you can now make many specific experiments and ideas to play around with and you
might never know you can make something superficial or ideal.

In the context of technology, it is also connected with science because through theories and
experiments you can make new kinds of technologies using the brain or ideas you have collected
through the years. But what makes it powerful? For example, when an idea or simple scientific
idea comes to your mind and you successfully made that idea through fruit of labor you can get
great power not just for yourself but for the country you live in and it makes your life easy. To
make it simpler let us say the Brand today Apple or Android. Because of their hard work in
experimenting they made a cellphone today which made everyone’s life easier and that has been a
great influence of power throughout the world because everyone is using it and it is a necessity.

In the context of Society, it is also connected to the two ideas Science and Technology. Through
experiment of ideas and making it into real machines. We the peoples in society will now use it to
make our lives easier and that shows how powerful knowledge can be. Knowledge has been a
unique part of our body system which shows how our vast thinking can make a good participation
for the society. It also gives big effects on the government because if the government had an idea
about that specific knowledge, they can use it as a weapon for other countries.

First, it all started because of the fire which made the life of the historical people easier. Their only

that they need to walk in two legs straight it has affected the present us how to walk correctly.
They also created a primitive culture which made new ideas how to communicate with other people
and make it easier for us today how to express our ideas to people. Also, the fire that they made
an idea of making an easier idea of cooking today which is now used for gas.

Bronze Age

How did Bronze Age become an intellectual revolution?

In this Age the humans have started to change their capacity to gain knowledge due to their
cognitive thinking or function making us more rational. Which today helped us made new ideas
and technologies.

Through the hunting and shifting of places of the bronze age people they have shifted to
agricultural thinking and made communities and buildings and the places of the resources they
need to cultivate like land, crops, water and more. Which today helped us make medicines,
machineries such as windmill, dam and food.

3. What is the role of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in nation
building? Aside from the DOST, can you think of other government agencies (cabinet level)
that utilizes science and technology to help in nation building? (20 pts.)

First, what is the role of DOST in our government? The role of DOST or the Department of Science
and Technology is too provide governing on the providing of central direction or leadership to all
technological ideas and to formulate ideas for the building of the nation. How? By promoting the
idea or knowledge from the scientists that they have it can give a big effect to our economic society.
A society full of industries and machineries shows a country that is productive and employment
full.

Aside from DOST, there is also an agency called DoA or Department of Agriculture which governs
on agriculture and how do they utilize science and technology? They utilize it by using the
technologies to generate fast services and crops which makes our country improve more. But
where does science come? Science has already started from the start which is by creating and
formulating idea you have already started science and also by observing what is wrong and needs
to be changed you are also doing science.
