Text A The Artist is Present, 2010
This art performance by the Belgrade-born artist Marina Abramović, which took place at the Museum of Modern Art in
New York, lasted for only 736 hours and 30 minutes but captured the attention of both international media and general
public. In terms of materials used, Abramović’s artwork was quite simple; it consisted of a wooden table and two wooden
chairs, and, of course, the artist herself. Marina, dressed in a long red dress, sat still and quiet on one of the chairs,
separated from the other unoccupied chair by the table. Any visitor of the museum could sit on the empty chair opposite her
for as long as they desired and stare back at the artist. There were some requirements for the visitors to comply with,
though: they had to remain silent and sit on the chair one by one.

Text B Marat (Sebastião), 2008

Marat (Sebastião) is part of a series of photographic portraits called Pictures of Garbage. In 2008, Brazilian photographer
and mixed-media artist Vik Muniz decided to take pictures of six trash-pickers styling them as figures from iconic
paintings, like Jacques-Louis David’s Death of Marat. After Muniz had taken the photographs, he used trash from the
world’s biggest garbage dump near Rio de Janeiro to sculpt the portraits of the trash pickers and photographed them.
According to Vik Muniz the trash metaphorically symbolises the low social status of the trash-pickers. The portrait of
Marat was sold for 50,000 dollars by an auction house.

Text C Huffy Howler, 2004

Huffy Howler is a sculpture created by Rachel Harrison. None of the components of the sculpture seems to combine with
the rest, although somehow they form a kind of logical coherence bordering absurdity. Harrison brought together a Huffy
Howler bike with a flat front tire, a number of cheap black purses, a metal pole adorned with synthetic sheepskin as well as
a photograph of Mel Gibson, a famous Hollywood star, hanging over the skin to make this unique piece of art. Some art
critics claim that the author wanted to represent the concept of a Greek or Roman statue of a rider. But it’s much more
likely that by combining clearly uncombinable everyday objects, Harrison raises the question whether the only purpose of
modern sculpture is to either memorialise or idealise.
