Kirchhoff’s Laws

Kirchhoff’s First Law

This law states that the algebraic sum of the currents at a junction is zero. In other words, it
states that the sum of the currents leaving a junction is equal to the sum of the currents into
the junction. This law is a statement of the conservation of charge.

Kirchhoff’s Second Law

This states that around and closed circuit, the algebraic sum of the electromotive forces (emf)
is equal to the algebraic sum of the products to current and resistance in the circuit. This is a
statement of the conservation of energy.
