Team project (50% of the final grade)

A team project is a report analyzing

the strategy by a company of your choice

Adr added Slide 6

In small teams, you will collect and analyze information about the company’s strategy from external
available sources, and write a Word doc report aimed at /

- analyzing (a) the company’s external environment and its competitive advantage,

- and (b) its business and corporate strategic choices.

The instructor will advise and supervise you during tutorials and office hours.

Adr added Slide 7

What we expect for that first part A of your report
First, you have to analyze the external environment of

- Including its macro environment (i.e. PESTEL analysis) and the industry (Porter Five
Forces analysis).
- To this aim, you should also identify the industry or the sector organization (what are
the industry's boundaries? Which are the main competitors?).

Second, you have to analyze your selected company internal environment, including its
resources and competencies and its capabilities (VRIN framework and Value Chain
analysis). How they create some value, how they propose that value?

In sum, part (a) of the report you should conclude on what are the external and internal
sources of your selected company’s competitive advantages (if any) in front of their
market opponents.

A complete guideline on the team project

(e.g., writing format, words limit, examples of what we expect as a report,

deadlines and penalties for missing a deadline) is available

in the course folder on K2.

Adr added Slide 9

The final version of the team project must include the following sections,

1. Title page. The first page of your report must mention /

the title of your team project,

the full names of your team members and their email addresses,
the name of your chosen company,
the number of your TD group in the strategy course, that of your tutorial instructor and your campus location

2. Introduction. The introduction section should contain a few brief paragraphs introducing

(a) the context of your report and an explanation of why the chosen company is interesting
and relevant to study;

(b) the objective of the report;

(c) a description of the methodological and analytical approach the report follows to achieve this objective;

(d) a description of the main findings;

(e) a summary of the main conclusions and recommendations

Adr added Slide 10

To achieve clarity, you can end the introduction section with a paragraph annotating the structure of the report,
for example

"The next sections are organized as follows.

In section 2 we analyze the firms’ changing environment.

In section 3 we analyze the firm’s industry…”

3. External and Internal analysis (i.e., part [a] of the team project – see the course syllabus)

In this part you will report results from your strategy analysis of the business environment of the chosen firm.

You will develop two subsections.

First, you will report results from your analysis of the external environment (e.g., applications of PESTEL and
Porter’s five Forces frameworks) in order to highlight the external influences that impact on the company’s
decisions and performance.

Second, you will report results from your analysis of the internal environment (e.g., applications of VRIN
framework) to highlight how the firm’s resources and capabilities match with the opportunities that arise from the
external environment.

GUIDELINES FOR THE TEAM PROJECT

Either when choosing, you have identified a strategic problem at the firm or you will discover

The selected problem needs to be strategic in nature, meaning that it will require at least a partial rethinking
of how a firm creates and captures value, thus changing the business and/or corporate strategy.

A few essential points about data collection and analysis:

Data sources at your disposal

The SKEMA library (http://library.skema.edu/fr/category/bases-de-donnees/) provides you access to
available databases Amadeus, Factiva Dow Jones, or Xerfi Knowledge

Google Finance (www.google.com/finance),

OECD data (www.oecd.org),
World Bank data (www.worldbank.org)
Societe.com

Analytical tools at your disposal

Team work and submissions
Each team must collect information on the company’s strategy in France and overseas (if relevant) it
must carefully cite the sources from which information on the case has been drawn.

A list of business-critical information sources is available in the team project guideline

on K2 database.

Based on this information, the team will work on a report (Word doc) composed of two parts:

(a) external and internal analysis;

(b) and (b) strategic choices

A draft of part (a) will be finalized during session 3 and submitted by email to your tutorial instructor
no later than March 20th, 2020.

A draft of part (b) will be finalized during session 10.

The final complete version of the report [parts (a) and (b)] will be submitted by email to your tutorial
instructor no later than April 30th, 2020

Project evaluation
Teams’ projects will be evaluated based upon quality of the written analysis
(submitted Word doc) by:

- means of variety of the data sources (25%)

- relevance of your analysis (25%)
- clarity of your writing and logical flow (25%)
- relevance of your discussion (25%)

All submission deadlines are strictly enforced. Late submissions will be assigned with a
one point malus on the team project grade for each day of delay.

The team projects must be an original work.

Each project will be checked for plagiarism through URKUND prior grading. If a minimum
of 20% of the project’s text comes from other students’ works or other sources, it will be
considered as plagiarism and students in the team will receive a failing grade for the
course.
