Learning styles a. Visual - The visual learner takes mental
pictures of information given, so in order
for this kind of learner to retain
information, oral or written, presentations
of new information must contain diagrams
and drawings, preferably in color. The
visual learner can't concentrate with a lot
of activity around him and will focus better
and learn faster in a quiet study
environment.
b. Kinesthetic - described as the students in
the classroom, who have problems sitting
still and who often bounce their legs while
tapping their fingers on the desks. They are
often referred to as hyperactive students
with concentration issues.
c. Auditory- a learner who has the ability to
remember speeches and lectures in detail
but has a hard time with written text.
Having to read long texts is pointless and
will not be retained by the auditory learner
unless it is read aloud.
d. Activist - Learns by having a go
e. Reflector - Learns most from activities
where they can watch, listen and then
review what has happened.

HOW TO USE THIS

COMPETENCY-BASED LEARNING MATERIAL (CBLM)

Welcome to the competency-based learning material for the module:

Preparing Computer- Aided Drawings. This module contains training
materials and activities for you to accomplish.

The unit of competency “Prepare Computer- Aided Drawings”,

contains the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for Technical Drafting
at National Certificate Level II (NC II).

You are required to go through a series of learning activities in order

to complete each learning outcomes of the module. In each learning
outcome, there are reference materials or instructional sheets for further
reading to help you better understand the required activities. Follow the
activities at your own pace and answer the self-check at the end of each
learning outcome. If you have questions, please feel free to ask for the
assistance of your trainer/facilitator.

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL)

You may have some or most of the knowledge and skills included in
this learner’s guide because you have:

 Been working in the same industry for some time.

 Already completed training in this area.

If you can demonstrate to your trainer that you are competent in a

particular skill, you don’t have to do the same training again.

If you feel that you have some skills, talk to your trainer about having
them formally recognized. If you have a qualification or certificate of
competence from previous trainings, show them to your trainer. If the skills
you acquired are still current and relevant to the unit of competency, they
may become part of the evidence you can present for RPL. If you are not
sure about the currency of your skills, discuss this with your trainer.

A Trainee Record Book (TRB) is given to you to record important
dates, jobs undertaken and other workplace events that will assist you in
providing further details to your trainer/assessor. A Record of
Achievement/Progress Chart is also provided to your trainer to
complete/accomplish once you have completed the module. This will show
your own progress.

DIRECTION FOR USE OF THE CBLM

This module was prepared to help you achieve the required
competency: Prepare Computer- Aided Drawings. This will be the source
of information for you to acquire the knowledge and skills in this particular
module with minimum supervision or help from your trainer. With the aid
of this material, you will acquire the competency independently and at your
own pace.

Talk to your trainer and agree on how you will both organize the
training of this unit. Read through the module carefully. It is divided into
sections which covers all the skills and knowledge you need to successfully
complete in this module.

Work through all the information and complete the activities in each
section. Do what is asked in the INSTRUCTIONAL SHEET (TASK SHEET,
OPERATION SHEET, and JOB SHEET) and complete the SELF-CHECK.
Suggested references are included to supplement the materials provided in
this module.

Most probably, your trainer will also be your supervisor or manager.

He is there to support you and show you the correct way to do things. Ask
for help.

Your trainer will tell you about the important things you need to
consider when you are completing activities and it is important that you
listen and take notes.

You will be given plenty of opportunities to ask questions and practice

on the job. Make sure you practice your new skills during regular work
shifts. This way, you will improve both your speed and memory and also
your confidence.

Talk to more experienced workmates and ask for their guidance.

Use the self-check questions at the end of each section to test your
own progress.

When you are ready, ask your trainer to watch you perform the
activities outlined in the module.

As you work through the activities, ask for written feedback on your
progress. Your trainer gives feedback/pre-assessment reports for this
reason. When you have successfully completed each element or learning
outcome, ask your trainer to mark on the reports that you are ready for
assessment.

When you have completed this module (several modules) and feel
confident that you have had sufficient practice, your trainer will arrange an
appointment to qualified trainer to assess/evaluate you. The result of your
assessment/evaluation will be recorded in your COMPETENCY

2. Cartesian Coordinate System

AutoCAD provides the user with an infinite two dimensional area to

work with. Any entities place on the working two dimensional planes
can be defined relative to the Cartesian coordinate system.

The Cartesian coordinate system divides a two dimensional plane with

two perpendicular axis. The X axis runs horizontal across the bottom
of the screen. The Y axis runs vertically along the left side of the
screen. These two axes intersect at the bottom left corner of the
screen.

Each of these axes is further divided into segments. Each segment is

given a value. The X axis segments increase in value to the right. The
positive X values are to the right of the intersection of the two axes.
The negative X values are to the left. The positive Y values are above
the intersection and increase up. The negative Y values are below.

Dynamic Input provides a command interface near the cursor to help
you keep your focus in the drafting area.

When Dynamic Input is on, tooltips display information near the

cursor that is dynamically updated as the cursor moves. When a
command is active, the tooltips provide a place for user entry.

4. TRIM

The Trim command allows you to trim (shorten) the end of end object
back to the intersection of another object (figure). The middle section of an
object can also be trimmed between two intersection objects. There are two
steps to this command;

1. PICK one or more “cutting edge” (existing object)

2. Then PICK the object or objects to trim (portion to remove)

The cutting edges are highlighted after selection. Cutting edges themselves
can be trimmed if they intersect with other cutting edges, but lose their
highlight when trimmed.

9. EXTEND

Extend can be thought of as the opposite of Trim. Objects such as Lines,

Arc, and Pline can be extended until intersecting another object called a
‘boundary edge’ as in Figure 5.18. The command first requires selection of
existing object to serve as ‘boundary edge(s)’, which become highlighted, and
then the objects to extend are selected. Objects extend until, and only if,
they eventually intersects ‘boundary edge’. An Extended object acquires a
new endpoint at the boundary edge intersection.

Methods for invoking the EXTEND command include:

Toolbar :
Pull-down menu : MODIFY > EXTEND
Command : Extend

The edge mode and Project mode switches operate identically to their
function with the Trim command. Use Edge mode with the Extend option if
you want a boundary edge object to be imaginarily extended.

10. Fillet

The fillet command automatically rounds a sharp corner (intersection of

two Lines, Arcs, Circles, or Pline vertices) with a radius. You only specify the
radius and select the objects to be filleted. The objects to fillet do not have to
completely intersect but can overlap. You can specify whether or not the
object are automatically extended or trimmed as necessary

Polyline/Radius/Trim/<Select first object>: r (Indicates the radius
option) Enter fillet radius < 0.5000>: (value) or PICK (Enter a value for
the desired fillet radius or select two points to interactively specify the
radius)
Command:

11. CHAMFER

Chamfer is a manufacturing process used to replace a sharp corner with

an angled surface. In AutoCAD, Chamfer is commonly used to change the
intersection of two Lines or Plines by adding an angled line. The Chamfer
command is similar to fillet, but rather than rounding with a radius or
“fillet”, an angled line is automatically drawn at the distances ( from the
existing corner ) that you specify.

Methods for invoking the CHAMFER command include:

Toolbar :
Pull-down menu : MODIFY > CHAMFER
Command : Chamfer
Chamfer can be created by two methods: Distance (specify two distances) or
Angle (Specify a distance and an angle).

Distance option  is used to specify the two values applied to create the
chamfer. The value indicates the distances from the corner (intersection of
the two lines) to each chamfer endpoint. Use the chamfer command once to
specify distances and again to draw the chamfer.

Command: chamfer
(TRIM Mode) Current chamfer Dist1 = 0.0000, Dist2 = 0.0000

12. Offset

Offset creates a parallel copy of selected object. Selected object can be Lines,
Arcs, Circles, Plines or other objects. Two options are available with offset;
offset a specified distance and offset through a specified point.

Methods for invoking the OFFSET command include:

Toolbar :
Pull-down menu : MODIFY > OFFSET
Command : Offset

13. Divide

DIVIDE marks off a specified number of equal lengths on a selected

object by placing point objects or blocks along the length or perimeter of the
object. Valid objects that can be divided include arcs, circles, ellipses and
elliptical arcs, polylines, and splines.

Methods for invoking the DIVIDE command include:

Pull-down menu: DRAW > POINT>DIVIDE

Command: Divide

1 From the Draw menu, choose Point Divide.

2 Select a line, arc, spline, circle, ellipse, or polyline.
3 Enter the number of intervals you want to represent.

AutoCAD places a point at each interval on the object.

The point objects that are added to the object can be used for
subsequent construction by allowing you to OSNAP to equally spaced
intervals (Nodes). After using the Divide Command, the point objects may

Introduction to Template in AutoCAD

As we all know, AutoCAD is a computer adding design and drafting software

developed by Autodesk. It is used in various fields like construction,
manufacturing, researching, etc. Many versions of this software are
available based on the character of the work. AutoCAD helps users to draw
2D as well as 3D drawings of the product or project. As a design engineer or
design professional, our main aim is to make our work easier and time-
effective. For this, we try many ways to reduce the toughness of our work.
Template in AutoCAD is one of such features which help us to reduce our
work and to save time. Before starting a new design project we have to
change many settings in the drawing page like units, sizes, dimension
styles, layers, etc. It is not easy and practical to do the settings every time
you start a new drawing.

To overcome this task you can use templates in AutoCAD with all the
settings you want to have in a particular project. Once you set this drawing
template with all your custom settings you can save it and use any time for
your drawings. Templates are saved with DWT extension and after when you
save your work in a template file it gets saved in DWG extension.

Today we are going to discuss creating your own custom settings and save it
as the template file.

How to Create Template in AutoCAD

Step 1: The first step for creating a custom template is to open the AutoCAD
software and select the new drawing option as shown in the image below. It
is the same for all the different types of AutoCAD software like mechanical,
MEP, electrical, etc.

Step 2: After selecting the drawing option, another page showing
different saved templates will be opened on your screen. From the various
files given, select the acad template as shown in the above image and click
open. This is the place where our saved templates are located. After saving
your custom template you can open it from this location itself.

Step 3: After this, a new drawing page will be opened in your

software. This is the template in which you can set your custom settings.
Change whatever settings you want to have in your project. You can set
preferences or dimensions in the drawing; you can edit the title block, erase
or add drawing elements, update dimension style, etc. After updating all
your setting you need to save the template file.

Step 4: To save the Templates in AutoCAD you need to click the ‘A’
symbol at the top left corner of the page. Then click save as option and save
a copy of the drawing as Drawing Template. Check the above-given image for
your reference.

Step 5: While saving the template file select the ‘.dwt’ extension from
the drop-down menu. You can see many other extensions including ‘.dwg’ in

AutoCAD typically deals in millimeters, but Ordnance Survey data
available in Digi-map is provided in meters. The instructions below explain
how to re-scale a drawing from meters to millimeters.
Set the correct map units
1. Open the DWG file downloaded from Digimap in AutoCAD.
2. Type 'units' in to the command bar and press enter, the Drawing
Units window appears:

3. Using the dropdown in the 'Insertion Scale' section select 'Meters' if

not currently set.
4. Press the OK button to close the window.

Change the model file from meters to millimeters

AutoCAD now knows that each unit in the map is 1 meter in the
model. However, printing in AutoCAD is based on ISO paper sizes using
millimeters so in order to print at a specific scale you need to convert the
model from meters to millimeters.

1. Press Ctrl + A on your keyboard to select all elements in the drawing.

2. Type ‘scales' in to the command bars and press enter.

3. AutoCAD will ask 'SCALE Specify base point:', type '0,0' (without the
quotes) and press enter.
4. AutoCAD will ask 'SCALE Specify scale factor or [Copy Reference]',
type '1000' (without the quotes) and press enter. You may need to

press the zoom extents button   to view the data.

This will have changed the drawing from metres to millimetres.

Creating a print file at a specified scale

1. In the main AutoCAD map window select the 'Layout1' tab at the
bottom left.

2. On the layout page, delete the existing Viewport to give you a blank
page. Do this by clicking once on the black box that highlights the
extents of the Viewport (it will change to blue to indicate that it is
selected), then press delete.

3. This will leave you with a blank page.

4. Change the paper size to the one you want to print. Do this by right
clicking on the 'Layout1' tab and select 'Page Setup Manager' from the
popup menu.

Saving and Backup

Revision # 00
Backup (.bak) Files
Drawing backup files are typically created in two scenarios:

 Every time a .dwg file is manually saved. By default the file will be

saved in the same location as the .dwg and will have the same name as
the drawing but with a .bak extension, such as, site_topo.bak.
 When an Automatic Save (.sv$) File is overwritten by another
automatic save. In this case, the .bak file will be located in the same
folder as the .sv$ files, with additional text appended to the file name
(e.g. site_topo_1_20972_f94baa58.bak).
A backup file is an exact copy of the drawing file prior to the last saves.
As such, backup files are always one version older than the currently saved
drawing. Only one backup file is retained at a time so newly created
backups will always replace older backups of the same name. Backup files
are created only if the system variable ISAVEBAK is set to 1.

Backup files are essentially renamed. dwg files. Data saved in . bak files can

be recovered by renaming the . bak extension to . dwg and then opening
that file in AutoCAD.

MOVEBAK Command

Included in the AutoCAD Express Tools is the MOVEBAK command which

permits specifying an alternative folder for . bak files. To keep .bak files in a
single location, as opposed to keeping them in the same folder as the
associated drawings, use the MOVEBAK command to specify another folder
and all .bak files will be automatically moved there when created. Enter "."
as a value in the command to reset AutoCAD to the default behavior.
Note: MOVEBAK is only available in Autodesk products that include
the AutoCAD Express Tools. The MOVEBAK command has not been
updated in recent years so it may not support paths with embedded
spaces.

Automatic Save (.sv$) Files

Automatic save files—commonly referred to as "autosave" files—are backup
files created automatically by the Autosave feature. Automatic save is
enabled by default for every 10 minutes. The number of minutes between
automatic saves can be set in the Open and Save tab in the Options dialog
box or by using the SAVETIME system variable.

I Raffy Geronimo
Revision # 00
QSAVE, SAVE, and SAVEAS will delete the current. sv$ file and halt the
automatic save timer until an edit is made to the drawing. Closing a drawing
and electing to not save it will delete the autosave file.

If AutoCAD crashes or is otherwise abnormally terminated during a session,

data saved in. sv$ files can be recovered by locating the autosave file,
renaming the. sv$ extension to .dwg and then opening that file in
AutoCAD. The autosave file will contain all drawing information as of the
last time autosave ran. When AutoCAD closes normally, sv$ files are deleted
as any open drawings would be closed/saved normally.

The location of autosave files in the Windows operating system can be

determined by going to the Files tab in the Options dialog box and
inspecting the Automatic Save File Location folder in the hierarchy, or by
using the SAVEFILEPATH variable. In the Mac OS, this can be found under
the Application tab in Preferences.
On Windows:

Step 1: Make sure Autosave is enabled.

Autosave creates regular backups of your drawing in case your computer or

AutoCAD shuts down, or in case you just forget to save for a while.

The settings for the Autosave feature are located in the CAD Options dialog
box. Open the Options dialog box:

We recommend setting this number to 10 or less.

Step 2: Practice opening an Autosave file.

Autosave files are saved in a location that's also set in the Options dialog box.
To find this location, select the Files tab.
Expand the  Automatic Save File Location entry by clicking the plus (+)
sign to the left. The Autosave folder location is listed here.
Take note of this folder location.

Using the Windows File Explorer, navigate to the folder listed in
the Automatic Save File Location.

Look for the name of the file you want to save. You should see two versions of
this file:
 One with a .bak extension (BAK file)
 One with a .sv$ extension (AutoCAD Autosave Drawing file)

To be able to locate and open this folder, you'll likely need to turn on
your hidden files and folders. To be able to see the file extensions, you'll
need make sure file extensions are visible on your computer.
The .sv$ file of your drawing is the file that's created automatically by the
Autosave feature. Keep in mind that this file will be deleted automatically
whenever AutoCAD closes normally. So do not close CAD when opening a
backup file

Top open an Autosave file, locate the most recent .sv$ file with the same
name as your drawing.

Change this file's extension so it's a DWG file.

I Raffy Geronimo
Revision # 00
You can then save this DWG file in the location where you'd normally save
your drawing.

Step 3: Enable the manual backup feature, and restore manual backups

Remember that .bak file of your drawing from Step 2? That's a backup file

that's created automatically each time you save your drawing. In case you've
closed AutoCAD or otherwise lost the most recent .sv$, you can restore the
most recent .bak file of your drawing.
To ensure that this backup file is created each time you save, make sure
the ISAVEBAK system variable is enabled (set to 1).
Type ISAVEBAK in the Command line, and press Enter. The value should
already be set to 1. If not, type 1 and press Enter. AutoCAD will now create
a .bak file of your drawing each time you save.

To restore the .bak file of a drawing, locate it in the Automatic Save File
Location (shown in Step 2 above) and change its extension so it's a DWG
(.dwg) file.
Step 4: Save, save, save!

It's always a good idea to save your drawings. The Autosave feature is a
great safeguard, but you should definitely be in the habit of saving your
work regularly.

We recommend saving by pressing CTRL + S  every 15 minutes or less.
