Reflection Paper: Every Child is Special

It was 2011 when I’ve got a chance to watch this movie for the very first time. I was applying for
a job then of become a staff of the Non-Government Organization (NGO) here in Ozamiz City which is
known as Gitib Incorporated “A Resource Center for Sustainable Development” who focus in Children’s
Right and Environmental Protection. Before the interview the Director asked us if we knew what kind of
job we were applying for? and what could be our role if we get hired? Some of us answered but none of it
satisfies the director. So, he said that he gave us a chance and told us to watched these movie “Every
Child is Special” and perhaps, we could answer the panel of interviewers. And, if we are able to pass we
might have a hint about the kind of work they had. I was amazed and literally crying a lot while watching
the movie. Little did I know that the job I am applying is a personal fight. Back then, I understand why
my boss asked us that question. He simply acknowledged that it’s not just a job but a true passion of
genuine love for the children. And sincerely cares for them is everyone’s responsibility whoever we are
and wherever we are even without someone who acknowledge and pay for us.

For two years that I’ve been working in this organization and they assigned me in Davao City and
became part of the project called MAGCRP “Mindanao Action Group for Children Rights and
Protection” partners with the “Save the Children” in Sweden who campaigned against Corporal
Punishment. I can say that this movie helped us a lot as advocators to spread the effects of corporal
punishments, whether it is a verbal or physical punishment that lead to abusive interaction to the children.
I have seen a lot of cruelty and abuse children at home and schools and it’s really pitiful to see them. In
that span of time I have used my capability to be part of the team who saves children and helps them
believe their self again, dream again and live happily without following the standards of life but to live on
their ability and capacity. It’s not an easy job and up to now when I think all those scenarios it really
made me cry.

Now my teacher asked us to do a reflection paper in this movie, I watched the movie and
surprisingly I cried a lot and felt pity those children again. But I realized that Nikumbh is a teacher and I
will soon to be one and he is not just a teacher but a person who has warmth heart and sincerity in caring
for his students. Nikumbh is a reminder to all teachers and myself of what should be the teacher and what
would be the teacher looks like inside his classroom. After all, me being NGO worker and will become a
teacher has the same field of work. We are teaching children and protect their rights, lead them in the
right path where dreams and possibility are visible to achieve.

Teacher has a great responsibility in shaping the characters and lives of the children. But it’s the
teacher’s choice on what kind of approach and a way of teaching he/she would implies to his/her students
inside the classroom that will not compromise learning and become stress and be burden to all the
students. It is a challenge to every teacher that he/she becomes an open door of hope, trust and love to all
rejected students who gain nothing but doubts and confusion. A challenge to all the teacher who sees
positivity beyond the negativity of the students as well as a challenge to all the teacher who will cares for
their students, reassured them that “it’s okay to get mistakes”, “try again I am here for you”. After all
caring is very important, quoted by the movie “caring has the power to cure and solve the pain”. I know,
teacher has a main goal is to create a smart, well-disciplined and successful student who can compete into
the world without fears but also the teacher must not forget that every child has unique skills, capabilities
and dreams, every child is different each of his own pace and setting a tight standard could lead them into
darkness and lose themselves. Now I’m asking myself; I am ready to become Nikumbh to my students
soon? Well, it’s my choice if I will become like him I should prepare myself starting today, equip myself
with positivity and dreams that I will be going to share to my students in the near future in God’s will.
