BIOGRAPHY TEXT

A biographical text is a text that explains or introduces a character about his life history as well
as his strengths and weaknesses, which later can be a role model for readers. But do you know
that the Biography belongs to the type of recount text? Because biographies contain the
contents or life journey of famous figures, both those who have passed away or those who are
still alive. To dive deeper into what Biography is, let's learn at the LA1 material below.

When we want to create or teach writing biographical texts to students, we must pay attention to the details of what points should focus on pouring into the
text. These points include who the person is, what is the person, his/her birth, parents or family, childhood, school life, carrier life, marriage, family life,
achievements, death if the character has died, and the moral value that can the reader get from the text. We can invite students to make simple biographies of
influential figures in their area or about school principals or senior teachers who have exemplary achievements.

HISTORICAL RECOUNT

A historical recount is a type of recount text that tells about the history, both historical sites and
historical objects. For example, the story of Prambanan Temple, Battle of Surabaya, Bandung
sea of fire, Rengasdengklok, etc. Usually presented the occurrence of the events
chronologically. Here are the detail information that I captured in LA 2:

DEFINITION OF HISTORICAL RECOUNT

 Historical recount is concerned with a history of a place or an object
 Historical recount is closely related to the history of a place or an object which i
s very memorable and considered important throughout life. This type of the te
xt is a kind of recount which explains about the chronological events occurred i
n the past.

In writing historical recounts, it is better if we make a concept map of the most important things
to write into the text. For example, when we want to write a historical recount about a historical
event somewhere, the mind map we make must contain a sequence of important notes. These
notes are: what happened, where did it happen, when did it happen, who was involved in the
event, how did it happen, why did it happen and other additional formations that support the
construction of the text. In school learning, we can ask children in groups to write historical
reports about the history of the school's establishment. They can collect facts and information
from the school's library, the internet as well as interviews with figures who have been involved
or know the history of school establishment and up to its current development. In working on
the project, the students work collaboratively and use their critical thinking.

NOTE OF LEARNING ACTIVITY 3

FABLE

In this learning activity 3, we learn about the fable. Fable is included in the type of narrative text.
However, there is the main difference between fable and other types of narrative text. Fable is a
story that is intended to teach a lesson or moral value, and the animals as the characters in the
story talk and act like humans. Meanwhile, the characters in other types of narrative text are
human beings. The themes and characters are more interesting and funnier than other types of
narrative text, although they are intended to be entertaining. Here are some important
components that I got after studying LA 3

A fable is a story featuring animals, plants or forces of

nature which are aanthropomorphized (given human
qualities). A fable always ends with a moral value
which was intended as the lesson. This is the lesson
that is intended to be learnt through reading the story.
DEFINITION
A fable can relate to everyone and connect us with
other culture. It is often passed into our culture as
myths or legends and is used to teach us about morals.

In my opinion, fable is an impressive narrative text to learn. Fable teaching will be even more
impressive when presented through story videos. By using video media, the students also learn
listening skills. Because we study English as EFL, to make it easier for students, it would be
nice to include a story script in the video. Students can understand the storyline and grasp
moral values more easily. Thus, students can also easily identify the generic structure and
language features used in the text.

NOTE OF LEARNING ACTIVITY 4

LEGEND

A legend is a type of narrative text. According to the oxford dictionary, a legend is a traditional
story and sometimes about the history of places. So, a legend is a traditional story which is usually the
history of a place. As in Indonesia, for example, is the origin of Tangkuban Perahu, the origin of Lake
Toba and so on. The following are the important elements of the text I learned at LA4:

Legends are retold as if they are real

In my opinion, same with fable, a legend is also an impressive narrative text to learn. The
teaching and learning process will be even more impressive when the text is presented through
videos. By using video media, the students also learn listening skills. Because we study English
as EFL, to make it easier for students, it would be nice to include a story script in the video.
Students can understand the storyline and grasp moral values more easily. Besides, using
video as media, we can use picture matching or jumbled paragraph. Thus, students can also
easily identify the generic structure and language features used in the text.

Resume of Modul 4 – English for Entertainment

From learning activity 1 to learning activity 4, we are asked to observe Biography, Histori
cal Recount, Fable, and Legend and how to write them well and correctly. By reading and obser
ving some examples from some of these texts, we are led to analyse the social function, the ge
neric structure, the language feature used in these kinds of text. The expected skill after studyin
g this module is that we can make these texts correctly, according to the context.

Biography text and Historical Recount are included in the recount text type. What distinguishes t
he two texts is when we are talking about a famous and influential person, we are talking about
biography. On the other hand, when we will retell factual events in the past that historical values,
then we are talking about a historical recount.

Fable and Legend are included in the narrative text. The purpose of the two texts is the same, n
amely to entertain the readers or listeners and to provide a moral message to the readers/listen
ers. The difference between the two texts is that the characters in the fable are animals that spe
ak and act like human beings. In contrast, the main character in the Legend is human beings.

At last, I can conclude that recount and narrative text have some similarities and differences. Th
e similarities include the purpose of narrative text and recount text, namely to retell events that
occurred in the past. Both texts use the past tense. The generic structure of the two texts is alm
ost the same, which begins with the orientation, character introduction and setting of the story.
The difference between the two types of text is that narrative text consists of (orientation, compli
cation and resolution) while recount text consists of (orientation, event, reorientation). The narra
tive presents conflict in the story, while recount text does not present conflict and only describes
the sequence of events that occurred in detail. The narrative text has an uncertain tense becau
se it uses the sentence "once upon a time" in contrast to recount text where the time of an even
t is certain.
