PART 1 - GENERAL

0.3 DEFINITIONS
A. [Description: Engineered system for discharge and total flooding of hazard areas with
"FM-200," made by Great Lakes Chemical Corp].
B. [Description: Engineered system for discharge and total flooding of hazard areas with
"INERGEN," made by Ansul].
A. Design clean-agent extinguishing system, to include main and reserve cylinders, and obtain
approval from the Engineer and authorities having jurisdiction. Design system for Class A,
B, or C fires as appropriate for areas being protected and include safety factor. Use clean
agent indicated and in concentration suitable for normally occupied areas.
D. Cross-Zoned Detection: Include devices located in two separate zones. Sound alarm on
activating single-detection device, and discharge extinguishing agent on actuating single-
detection device in other zone.
1. Actuating First Detector in one zone: Give visual indication on annunciator panel,
energize audible alarm, shut down air-conditioning and ventilating systems serving
protected area, release and close doors in protected area, and send signal to fire alarm
system.
2. Actuating Second Detector in another zone: Give visual indication on annunciator
panel, energize audible alarm, shut down power to protected equipment, actuate time
delay for extinguishing-agent discharge for 30 seconds, and release extinguishing
agent.
3. Extinguishing-agent discharge will operate audible alarms and strobe lights.
G. Operating abort switches will delay extinguishing-agent discharge while being activated,
and switches must be reset to prevent agent discharge. Release of switch will discharge
agent.

B. Shop Drawings: Signed and sealed by a qualified professional engineer. Include design
calculations. Include the following for hazardous area enclosure, drawn to scale:

C. Approved Drawings: Working plans, prepared according to NFPA 2001, that have been
approved by the Engineer and authorities having jurisdiction. Include design calculations.
D. Field Test Reports: As specified in "Field Quality Control" and "Commissioning" Articles
in Part 3 of this Section. Indicate and interpret test results for compliance with performance
requirements.
B. Source Limitations: Obtain extinguishing agent and equipment through one source.
C. Product Options: Drawings indicate size, profiles, and dimensional requirements of clean-
agent extinguishing systems and are based on the specific system selected. Other
manufacturers' systems with equal performance characteristics may be considered. Refer to
Division 1 Section "Product Requirements."
F. FM Compliance: Provide components that are FM approved and are listed in FM's "Fire
Protection Approval Guide."
G. NFPA Compliance: Fabricate and label clean-agent extinguishing systems to comply with
NFPA 2001, "Clean Agent Extinguishing Systems."
A. Furnish extra materials described below that match products installed and that are packaged
with protective covering for storage and identified with labels describing contents. Deliver
extra materials to the Employer.
1. Detection Devices: Not less than 20 percent of amount of each type installed.
2. Container Valves: Not less than 10 percent of amount of each size and type installed.
3. Nozzles: Not less than 20 percent of amount of each type installed.
4. Extinguishing Agent: Not less than 100 percent of amount installed in largest hazard
area. Include pressure-rated containers with valves.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
A. Refer to Part 3 piping applications Article retained for applications of pipe, tube, fitting, and
joining materials.
B. Piping, Valves, and Discharge Nozzles: Comply with types and standards listed in
NFPA 2001, Section "Distribution," and Appendix A, for charging pressure of system.
B. Steel Flanges and Flanged Fittings: ASME B16.5, Class 300, unless Class 600 is indicated.
A. Refer to Division 15 Section "Basic Mechanical Materials and Methods" for basic joining
materials.
B. Steel, Keyed Couplings: UL 213, AWWA C606, approved or listed for clean-agent service,
and matching steel-pipe dimensions. Include ASTM A 536, ductile-iron housing, rubber
gasket, and steel bolts and nuts.
0.5 VALVES
B. Container Valves: With rupture disc or solenoid, capable of immediate and total agent
discharge and suitable for intended flow capacity.
D. Valves in Manifolds: Check valve; installed to prevent loss of extinguishing agent when
container is removed from manifold.
A. Description: Steel tanks, main and reserve, complying with ASME Boiler and Pressure
Vessel Code: Section VIII, for unfired pressure vessels. Include minimum working-
pressure rating that matches system charging pressure, valve, pressure switch, and pressure
gage.
B. Clean Agent: [INERGEN]; IG-541, mixture of nitrogen and carbon dioxide inert gases.
A. Nozzles shall be stainless-steel and shall be equipped with an integral strainer to prevent
matter inside the distribution piping from clogging the nozzle orifice. Each nozzle orifice
shall be provided with a seal to protect the nozzle from clogging by grease or other
obstructions. This seal shall detach upon actuation.
A. Description: UL-listed device with minimum 13.8 MPa pressure rating, to control flow and
reduce pressure of [INERGEN] gas in piping.
1. DN50 and Smaller: Piping assembly with orifice, sized for system design
requirements.
2. DN65 and Larger: Piping assembly with nipple, sized for system design
requirements.
B. Power Requirements: 230 V ac; with electrical contacts for connection to system
components and fire alarm system, and transformer or rectifier as needed to produce power
at voltage required for accessories and alarm devices.
a. Detection circuit.
b. Manual pull-station circuit.
c. Alarm circuit.
d. Release circuit.
a. Electrical contacts for shutting down fans, activating dampers, and operating
system electrical devices.
b. Automatic switchover to standby power at loss of primary power.
c. Storage container, low-pressure indicator.
d. Control interface capability with the Building Control System and Fire Alarm
System for general alarm, control panel fault and cylinder low pressure.
4. Annunciator Panel: Graphic type showing protected, hazard-area plans and locations
of detectors and manual-release stations. Include lamps to indicate device-initiating
alarm, electrical contacts for connection to control panel, and stainless-steel or
aluminum enclosure.
5. Standby Power: Lead-acid sealed batteries with capacity to operate system for 72
hours and alarm for minimum of 15 minutes. Include automatic battery charger, with
varying charging rate between trickle and high depending on battery voltage, that is
capable of maintaining batteries fully charged. Include manual voltage control, dc
voltmeter, dc ammeter, electrical contacts for connection to control panel, and
suitable enclosure.
A. Description: Comply with NFPA 2001 and NFPA 72, and include the following types:

D. Strobe Lights: Translucent lens, with "FIRE" or similar caption, Xenon lamp, 75 candela.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
0.1 EXAMINATION
A. Examine areas and conditions, with the Installer present, for compliance with hazardous
area leakage requirements, installation tolerances, and other conditions affecting work
performance.
B. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.
A. Flanged pipe and fittings and flanged joints may be used to connect to specialties and
accessories and where required for maintenance.
D. DN50 and Smaller: Copper tube; copper, solder-joint fittings; and brazed joints.
E. DN50 and Smaller: Black steel pipe, malleable-iron threaded fittings, and threaded joints.
F. DN50 and Smaller: Galvanized steel pipe, malleable-iron threaded fittings, and threaded
joints.
G. DN65 and DN80 : Copper tube; copper, solder-joints fittings; and brazed joints.
H. DN65 and DN80 : Black steel pipe, malleable-iron threaded fittings, and threaded joints.
I. DN65 and DN80 : Galvanized steel pipe, malleable-iron threaded fittings, and threaded
joints.
J. DN65 and DN80 : Black steel pipe; steel, grooved-end fittings; steel, keyed couplings; and
grooved joints.

M. DN100 and Larger: Galvanized steel pipe; steel, grooved-end fittings; steel, keyed
couplings; and grooved joints.
N. DN100 and Larger: Black steel pipe, forged-steel welding fittings, and welded joints.
1. Flanged pipe and fittings and flanged joints may be used to connect to specialties and
accessories and where required for maintenance.
2. Fittings Working Pressure: 13.8 MPa minimum.
3. Flanged Joints: Class 600 minimum.
4. All Sizes: Black, Schedule 80, steel pipe; forged-steel welding fittings; and welded
joints.
1. Flanged pipe and fittings and flanged joints may be used to connect to specialties and
accessories and where required for maintenance.
2. Fittings Working Pressure: 6900 kPa minimum.
3. Flanged Joints: Class 300 minimum.
4. All Sizes: Black, Schedule 40 or 80, steel pipe; forged-steel welding fittings; and
welded joints.
A. Install clean-agent extinguishing piping and other components level and plumb and
according to manufacturers' written instructions.
B. Refer to Division 15 Section "Basic Mechanical Materials and Methods" for basic pipe
installation and joint construction.
E. Install pipe and fittings, valves, and discharge nozzles according to requirements listed in
NFPA 2001, Section "Distribution," and related Appendix A paragraphs; and ASME B31.1.
0.5 CONNECTIONS
A. Drawings indicate general arrangement of piping, fittings, and specialties. The following
are specific connection requirements:
C. Connect electrical devices to control panel and to building's fire alarm system. Electrical
power, wiring, and devices are specified in Division 13 Section "Fire Alarm."
0.6 LABELING
B. Clear instructions shall be displayed at the entrance and inside the protected zones advising
the occupants to the minimum required actions to be taken in case of emergency / system
discharge. Instructions wording shall be coordinated with and approved by the authorities
having jurisdiction.
1. Report test results promptly and in writing to the Engineer and authorities having
jurisdiction.
1. After installing clean-agent extinguishing piping system and after electrical circuitry
has been energized, test for compliance with requirements.
2. Perform each visual and mechanical inspection and electrical test stated in NETA
ATS, Section 7, "Inspection and Test Procedures," and Section 8, "System Function
Tests." Certify compliance with test parameters.
1. Leak Test: After installation, charge system and test for leaks. Repair leaks and
retest until no leaks exist.
2. Operational Test: After electrical circuitry has been energized, start units to confirm
proper motor rotation and unit operation. Remove malfunctioning units, replace with
new units, and retest.
3. Test and adjust controls and safeties. Replace damaged and malfunctioning controls
and equipment.
0.9 COMMISSIONING
B. Verify that extinguishing system is installed and connected according to the Contract
Documents.
C. Verify that electrical wiring installation complies with the Contract Documents.
