What I Need to Know

Have you ever tried dancing any Philippine Folk dance? What have you observed
about the dance? How did your body react after dancing?
This module will help you learn about Philippine Folk dance and its steps.
Essential Learning Competency
Analyzes physiological indicators such as heart rate, rate of perceived exertion and
pacing associated with MVPAs to monitor and/or adjust participation.
(PEH12FH-lk-t-9)

OBJECTIVES:
At the end of this module, you as learner is expected to:
a. Familiarize and understand the nature of Philippine Folk Dance and master
several techniques as first step in learning the dance as a whole
b. Appreciate dance participation from analyzing good physiological outcomes
c. Perform various folkdance steps in different time signatures

What I Know

ACTIVITY 1: PRE-TEST
Instructions:
The purpose of this activity is to evaluate your aerobic capacity through getting
your own heart rate after dancing. You can use a digital heart rate monitoring device
BUT using the pulse rate method is highly encouraged for this activity.

USE THE FOLLOWING FORMULA IN GETTING YOUR THR OR TARGET HEART

RATE:
FORMULA: 220-AGE

Example:
If you're 18 years old, subtract 18 from 220 to get a maximum heart rate of 202.
This is the average maximum number of times your heart should beat per
minute during exercise.

DO THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITY

1. Calculate your target heart rate and write it in any available paper you have.
2. Find an open space for this activity.
3. Do a 1-minute warm-up exercise to prepare yourself for this activity.
4. Perform the dance video presentation that you submitted last week.

1
Make sure to perform it with a good amount of energy to create positive
results. AFTER PERFORMING, count your pulse rate through your carotid or
radial pulse for 1 minute. Then, CHECK IF THE RESULTS, is the same with your
calculated target heart rate.

If the result of your activity is 55% to 70% of your THR, then the performance
you made is in moderate intensity.
Example: The 55% of 202 is 111. If your pulse rate after your dance performance
is 91 then what you did is in moderate intensity.

But if, the result of your activity is 71% to 85% of your THR, then the
performance you made is in vigorous intensity.

Example: The 71% of 202 is 143. If your pulse rate after your dance
performance is 143 then what you did is in vigorous intensity.

IMPORTANT NOTE: CHECK YOUR PULSE RATE IMMEDIATELY AFTER

PERFORMING. RESTING BEFORE GETTING YOUR PULSE RATE CAN INVALIDATE
THE RESULTS OF YOUR THR.

5. After analyzing your results, it is now the best time to relax and re-hydrate.
Once well rested, copy and answer the following guide questions using the Word
document.

What’s New

I hope you are excited about the activities that you are going to do in this module.
Now, I want you to read and understand the nature of folk dance.

What is Folk Dance?

☞ A folk dance is a dance developed by people that reflect the life of the people of
a certain country or region. Not all ethnic dances are folk dances.
☞ For example, ritual dances or dances of ritual origin are not considered to be folk
dances. Ritual dances are usually called "Religious dances" because of their purpose.
☞ The terms "ethnic" and "traditional" are used when it is required to emphasize
the cultural roots of the dance. In this sense, nearly all folk dances are ethnic ones. If
some dances, such as polka, cross ethnic boundaries and even cross the boundary
between "folk" and "ballroom dance", ethnic differences are often considerable enough
to mention.

Apparently, this dance form is said to have been
popular in towns such as Carrascal, Cantilan, Lanuza,
