Groups of students will create 10-15 minute presentations for Wednesday, November 4th that include scenarios acting out key terms from readings on politeness. The presentations can be videos featuring all group members or a combination of a video and PowerPoint. They must include at least 8 terms from the readings and concepts around face, face threats, politeness strategies, and deference. Present 1 or more ‘stories’ or scenarios that include key terms from the 2 readings (Yule and Brown/Levinson). The basic idea is to act out your ‘stories’ and then explain them in your powerpoint expositions; or, explain them in your video, whichever way you believe will be more effective.
o Presentations should be approximately 10 – 15 minutes long. o Presentations will include videos with all group members participating. Of course, it is understood that you will have to organize (edit) individual clips together.
Groups will be 3 to 5 students o Groups of 3 should be about 10 minutes. o Groups of 5 should be about 13 – 15 minutes.
Include key terms and concepts from the reading, such as: • face • positive face / negative face • face wants • FTAs / FSAs • on record/ off record/ bald on record • mitigating devices • politeness • positive/negative politeness • positive/negative politeness strategies • solidarity strategies • deference strategies • pre-‐sequences
