CHAPTER 4

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter provides the presentation, analysis, and interpretation in accordance with the

statement of the problem and the hypothesis. The discussion focused on the access to social

media and academic performance among grade 10 students of the University of San Agustin.

Levels of Academic Performance and in Relation to Gender, Socio-economic Status, and

Place of Residence

In this study, the levels of academic performance of the respondents taken as a whole is

average (M=87.00). When grouped according to gender, male and female respondents have the

same level of academic performance (M=88.27 and M=85.73 respectively. This means that they

earned an average of 80% to 90%.

This may be brought about by the fact that most of the grade ten (10) students now are

more or less conscious about their academic performance and so they most of the time they

would spend time doing school related tasks assigned to them regardless of gender.

When grouped according to socio-economic status, the levels of academic performance

of the respondents is the same for high, average, and low status (M=87.67; M=86.46; M=86.80)

respectively.

When grouped as to place of residence, the level of academic performance of students in

both urban and rural areas is average (M=86.43 and M=88.86) respectively. Findings are

reflected in Table 2 of this study.

Levels of Access to Social Media Among Grade 10 Students

Table 3 revealed that access to social media site specifically facebook among Grade 10

students is high for both male and female (M= 3.87 and M=4.13) respectively, for those in urban

and rural areas (M=4.00 and M=4.23) respectively. This may be due to the fact that nowadays,

everyone has maintained a facebook account due to the fact that it has helped them in

communicating with friends and relatives. On the other hand, the level of access to social media

particularly facebook for those in the high and average income group is also high (M=4.00 and

M=4.23) respectively. While respondents in the low income group has an average (M=2.40)

access to facebook. This is true because access to social media site like facebook would entail a

monetary amount and so one’s access is limited by its income.

Table 4 on the other hand, showed that access to social media, specifically to twitter,

among Grade 10 students is high for both male and female (M=2.13 and M=3.07) respectively.

When grouped as to socio-economic status, level of access to twitter among respondents

belonging to high and average income group is also high (M=3.00 and M=2.46) respectively.

While respondents belonging to the low income group has a low level of access to twitter

(M=2.20). This may be due to the fact that having a twitter account would also entail a monetary

amount for one to use it.

When grouped according to place of residence, the level of access to twitter of the

respondents in the rural area is high (M=3.29) and low in the urban area (M=2.30). This may be

due to the fact that students in the rural area are forced to access this site for them not to be left

behind.

Access to YouTube of the respondents is reflected in Table 5. It showed that when

respondents are classified as to gender, socio-economic status, and place of residents, the level of

access to YouTube is high. This may due to the fact that in the Junior High School now,

activities are more or less interactive in nature that students find it very helpful and useful if they

will always find time in using YouTube to enhance whatever they have learned in the four walls

of the classroom.

Table 6 showed the levels of access to snapchat among the respondents. When grouped

according to gender, male had a low access to snapchat (M=1.93). This may be brought by the

fact that males are not frequent chatters. While females have a high access to snapchat

(M=2.40). This may be due to the reason that they are having strong tendencies to use this

because snapchat is like having an instagram account.
