background of Jose Rizal. 
2. Prepare a creative but accurate phylum genetic tree/ family tree of the Rizal
Family (from Rizal’s great grandparents to his siblings). 
3. Then at the bottom part, indicate your impression of the lineage of Rizal.

Everyone knows Jose Rizal, our national hero, but what exactly do we know about Jose Rizal apart
from his accomplishments as our national hero. Jose Rizal was born on June 19, 1861 in the town of
Calamba, Province of Laguna. He came from a big family, he was the 7th child from the 11 childrens of
Francisco Mercado Rizal and Teodora Alonso. He came from a distinguished family. His father Francisco
Mercado is a wealthy farmer who leased lands to the Dominican Friars. Francisco Mercado came from a
privileged family, his father, Juan Mercado, was elected as capitan del pueblo in 1808, 1813, and 1823. In
1849, a decree was released which ordered the FIlipinos to adopt Spanish Surnames, Francisco added the
surname “Rizal” which means “green field”. In 1848, Francisco married Teodora Alonso who belonged to
one of the wealthiest families in Manila. Teodora’s father, Lorenzo Alberto, was a member of the Spanish
Cortes. Teodora was described to be “a woman of more than ordinary culture” and a mathematician and
has read many books. Rizal's family became prominent members of the principalia class in the town of
Calamba. They were one to have the first concrete house in the town and it was described that the house
was. Jose Rizal was said to be affectionate to all his siblings but his relation with his only brother was
different for Paciano as he stood as his second father.  Paciano was known to join the Katipunan to fight for
the Independence.
