Subject: Report on how to prepare a CV and a Professional Portfolio

On Thursday, September 10, 2020, I attended a workshop on “How to prepare a CV and a

Professional Portfolio”, which was held remotely via Google Meet video conference. The
workshop convened at 12:00 p.m. and it was prepared by the student associations “Sociedad
Honoraria de Biología Tribeta, Cap. Zeta Kappa” and AEQF (“Asociación de Estudiantes de
Química y Física). The presenter was Dr. Pier Angeli LeCompté Zambrana, professor in the
English Department at the University of Puerto Rico in Ponce. The professor talked about how to
effectively prepare a curriculum vitae and a professional portfolio in order to display our academic
and career progress and accomplishments. The workshop adjourned at 1:15 p.m. In this report, I
will highlight some of the important points and detail what I learned in the workshop.

Curriculum Vitae (CV)

The purpose of a curriculum vita is to present your academic achievements and accomplishments
to a selection committee to show why it makes you the right person for a particular academic
position. It can be as long as you need it, but it has to be concise, clear and easy to read. It also has
to be up to date. The CV is divided into sections, which are: Education, Honors and Awards,
Employment history, Publications and Presentations, Research, Extracurricular and Volunteer
Experience, Certifications, Professional Affiliations, and Professional Development and
References.

Professional Portfolio
The purpose of a professional portfolio is to help the students to organize, keep track and store
documents connected to their career choice. It showcases the skills, experiences, and samples of
works or accomplishments of the students, which will enhance their CVs. It also displays the
strengths, weaknesses, preparations and the suitability for additional training opportunities of the
student before a committee. The portfolio is divided into sections, some of which are: a cover page,
table of content, cover letter, CV, Education and Training, Achievements and Awards, etc. The
portfolio can be done in a paper format, e-portfolio, web or video.

Conclusion
The workshop “How to prepare a CV and a Professional Portfolio” was extremely helpful given
that we have to prepare a curriculum vitae and/or a professional portfolio for when we apply to an
internship, a graduate school, a summer program, a specific job, etc. There is no “correct” or
“right” way to prepare a CV or a portfolio. Not everyone does it the same way. This is why this
workshop is so useful because it explains what are the important items that must be included into
a CV and a portfolio, and then you add your information as you go, but making sure that it is
concise, clear and clean, easy to read, and most importantly, that it looks professional.
