D. Discussing New Concepts and Practicing New Skills #1

One can infer a trend as something that is famous or widely known. However, the actual definition of trend is
not even nearly associated with popular. Technically, a trend is a directed movement or behavior.
Furthermore, a trend also implies change. This means sooner or later, a trend is bound to change.
On the other hand, a fad is something that people are highly interested in for a relatively short period of time.
This means that fad comes and goes. Although a fad is short lived, what is important is that fads can help
predict trends.

Activity 4: Using a Venn Diagram, compare and contrast trends and fads.
E. Discussing New Concepts

Elements of Trends and Fads

Appeal – This refers to the degree of attraction that a fad or a trend causes on people. Both fads and trends
are attractive to people. That is not extraordinary because trends, on many occasions, arise from fads.
Result – This pertains to the impact of a fad or a trend. Impact refers to the ability of a fad or trend to
produce a sustainable movement or change. Fads impact are merely hyped by media while trends continue
for a long period of time.
Scope – This indicates the extent of the influence of a fad or a trend. A fad has limited scope while trends is
far-reaching.
Support – This means the structure that enables a fad or a trend sustainable. With regard to fads, the support
is inexistent and it is unclear how the support was established. On the flip side, trends are relatively easy to
determine how they came to exist.
Sustainability – This refers to the length of time that a fad or trend can continue to exist. Fads are relatively
brief like weeks to months. On the other hand, trends tend to last months or years.
Value – This pertains to the utility or usefulness that can be derived from a fad or a trend. For fads, utility is
limited to areas where it is directly related. For trends, are useful to different areas which may not be related
to the trend.
