Only 100 years ago,20 percent of the world´s population lived in urban areas. By 1990, still
less than 40 percent lived in cities. But as of 2010, more than half the global population lives
in an urban area, even though cities make up only three percent of the earth´s surface. A
United Nations forecast predicted that by 2050, the percentage of people living in cities will
rise to 70 percent.
Some experts view this movement to the cities as a positive step for development. They say
cities are engines for economic growth and they point out that in most countries of Europe
and North America ,70 percent of the population is urban.
