Part I: Pavement selection and construction

What is pavement?

Types of Pavement.

Flexible Pavement

- What, use of materials

- How to construct
 (Sub-based materials used and construction technique)
- Environmental performance including sound, skid resistance and
deterioration
- Long term performance

Rigid Pavement

- What, use of materials

- How to construct
 (Sub-based materials used and construction technique)
- Environmental performance including sound, skid resistance and
deterioration
- Long term performance

Opinion
- Our Project (MDY –NPT)

 Pavement type (Facts)

 Why (Advantages)
Evaluate methods and techniques

For my project,
 Cement stabilized technique
o (Sub-base, Base)
o Easy, Time saving., . . . . (Advantages of Cement stabilized)
o Example (MDY MCDC)

Part II: Maintenance techniques

What is maintenance operation? Why?

To fulfill the requirements and to present improvements to a given existing and new
highway provision, we need to discuss the following:

1. Use of smart motorways

What? How? Different between motor way and motorways? Fig:

2. Public transportation systems

 What, why need? , Advantages
3. Highway safety
 Features (Guard rails, Guard post, Lamp posts, Driver alert, . .)

4. Proper drainage system

 What?, Important ? Proper Choose?

To evaluate common highway faults and highlight effective maintenance regimes as

preventative measures for a given project as followed:

5. Pavement defects
Pavements are deterioration due to many reasons. . . . . .
a) Alligator cracking

b) Longitudinal cracking

c) Block Cracking

d) center Cracking

e) Rutting

f) Shoving

g) Edge cracking

h) Transverse cracking

i) Joints reflection cracks

j) Slippage cracks

k) Depression

l) Upheaval

m) Raveling

Among them, I will discuss detail facts for Alligator cracking and longitudinal
cracking.

6. Essential or routine repair works

 What?, How? Why (Essential)?, Advantages?
7. Renewing worn out pavement surfaces
Why is it needed?, how to apply?

8. Roadside and shoulder maintenance

 Drainage, lamp post, painting, Grass removal, … ..
 Shoulder maintenance
 Failure , defects, hard shoulder (concrete shoulder)

To discuss techniques and methods which can improve the effectiveness and
conditions of the given highway project according to your maintenance planning.
- For my project
o Routine maintenance (Facts)
o Periodic maintenance (Facts)
o Special maintenance (Facts)

In the final stage, you have to critically evaluate a report on improvements to a

highway infrastructure scheme, including alternative actions that could be taken.
