MIDTERM EXAMINATION (TOUR121)

1. Why is tourism such an information intensive industry? Explain four reasons and elaborate by giving
example/s. (20 points)

- The tourism industry is an information intensive industry because it thrives on information. The size of
the industry alone suggests that it generates a big number of volumes of information to be communicated
and processed. As a passenger or tourists are taking on a trip, bunch and bunch of pieces of information
and messages must be exchanged. From the schedules, itineraries, payment modes, destinations,
passenger and product information; but the tourism industry possesses many other unique qualities, which
makes the need for the IT applications used by different tourism sectors, agencies, travelers and many
more. The table below shows different characteristics that makes it a reason for tourism to be a very
information-intensive industry.
