Grade 5 Teaching Plan

Position and Direction: Cartesian Plane

1. Reads position of objects in coordinate grid using ordered pair

Tuning in: Uses ordered pair to locate places or objects on a map (1 period)
Study the map of Ponorogo Regency of East Java below. (Distribute also the
map to each of the students).

source: http://sellyhendriati07.blogspot.co.id

Ponorogo regency is located on the south-west of East Java. Ponorogo

regency consist of many districts. On a map, the name of places is usually
written in really small letters, that sometimes it is not easy to find.
 On the map above, can you find Pulung District? Can you describe
the position of Pulung district to your friends in your class by using
verbal explanation.
 Can you find Jetis district? Try also to describe the position of Jetis
district verbally.

Sometimes it is not easy to describe something verbally.

Now, observe that on the bottom of the map we have letters like A, B, C,
etc. and on the left of the map we have numbers like 1, 2, 3, and so on.

Discussion:
Do you know what these letters and numbers are for?

Actually the function of the letter and the number above is to locate
position. When we combined the letter and the number together we can
locate the position of objects clearly in a map.

Please note that the location of Pulung district is in column J and row 8.

We say that the position of Pulung district is in (J,8). It is also okay to say that
the position of Pulung district is in (8,J), but commonly we mention the
horizontal part first and then the vertical part.

The pair of of number and letters like (J,8) is called a coordinate. A

coordinate (the pair of number of letters) locate the position of a place or a
point in a map.

The use of coordinate in everyday life
We use coordinate in many situation so we can spot position easily, for
example to determine our seat in the plane, in the cinema, or in the soccer
match. Nowadays, coordinate also being used to spot objects location on
earth.

2. Reads and writes the position of a point in Cartesian plane

Determines the coordinate of a point in Cartesian plane (1 period)

The picture below is called Cartesian plane. Cartesian plane is used to

locate the position of points on a plane.

Cartesian plane has two axis, the X-axis and Y-axis. The two axis intersect
perpendicularly in a point called O, the Origin. Usually, we write numbers in
each of the axis to help us tracking the distance from a point in a plane to
the Origin O.
 On the X-axis, the distance from O to the right is written in positive
numbers from 1, 2, 3, and so on infinitely. The distance from O to the
left is written in negative numbers from -1, -2, -3, and so on infinitely.
 On the Y-axis, the distance from O to the upper side is written in
positive numbers from 1, 2, 3, and so on infinitely. The distance from O
to the down side is written in negative numbers from -1, -2, -3, and so
on infinitely.

Every point on a plane is determined by its coordinate. Study the point A on
a Cartesian plane below.

Written by: Yudha Dirira PCN Page 7

The coordinate of a point A is an ordered number pair (x, y) where x and y is
determined as follow:

 To find x, you can draw a virtual line from point A which perpendicular
with X-axis. x is the number on X-axis which is passed by the line.

 To find y, you can draw a virtual line from point A which perpendicular
with Y-axis. y is the number on Y-axis which is passed by the line.

Study the position of point A in the Cartesian plane below.

What is the coordinate of point A?

The coordinate of A is (x, y) where x and y are determined as follow:

 To find x, you can draw a virtual line from point A which perpendicular
with X-axis. x is the number on X-axis which is passed by the line.

From the diagram we can know that x = 3.

Written by: Yudha Dirira PCN Page 9

 To find y, you can draw a virtual line from point A which perpendicular
with Y-axis. y is the number on Y-axis which is passed by the line.

From the diagram we can know that y = 2.

Therefore, the coordinate of the point A is (3, 2).

Next, let’s determine the coordinate of point B on the Cartesian plane

below.

Written by: Yudha Dirira PCN Page 10

The coordinate of B is (x, y) where x and y are determined as follow:
 To find x, you can draw a virtual line from point A which perpendicular
with X-axis. x is the number on X-axis which is passed by the line.
 To find y, you can draw a virtual line from point A which perpendicular
with Y-axis. y is the number on Y-axis which is passed by the line.

From the diagram we can know that x = 5 and y = 4.

Therefore, the coordinate of the point B is (5, 4).

Determines the position of a point with given coordinate in a Cartesian plane (1
period)

We have learned how to determine the coordinate of a point in a Cartesian

plane. Now we will determine the position of a point in a Cartesian plane if
we know its coordinate.

For example, a point P has coordinate (4, 2). Where is the position of point P
is a Cartesian plane?

To know the position of coordinate (4, -2) in a cartesian plane we need to

understand that the coordinate (4, -2) is an ordered pair, where the number
4 belongs to the X-axis and the number 2 belongs to the Y-axis.

So, to find the coordinate of point P(4, -2), follow the step below.
 Since the number 4 is belong to X-axis, draw a virtual line passing
number 4 in X axis which parallel to the Y-axis.

Written by: Yudha Dirira PCN Page 13

 Since the number -2 is belong to Y-axis, draw a virtual line passing
number -2 in Y axis which parallel to the X-axis.

 The position of point P(4,-2) is on the intersection of the two virtual lines.

Written by: Yudha Dirira PCN Page 14

There is an easier way to determine the position of a point in a cartesian
plane. For example, to find the position of point P(4,-2) in a cartesain plane,
do the following steps:
 Since the number 4 is belong to X-axis, mark the number 4 on the X-
axis.

 Since the number -2 is belong to Y-axis, mark the number -2 in Y axis.

Written by: Yudha Dirira PCN Page 15

 Think a virtual vertical line which pass 4 and horizontal line which pass
2. The intersection of the two lines determines the position of the point
P(4,-2) in the cartesian plane.

Discussion: Determining the position of points in Cartesian plane
Mark the position of the points with coordinate given below.

A = (3, 3) G = (-7, -3)

B = (-2, 3) H = (-2, 6)

C = (4, -3) I = (3, 0)

D = (-3, -4) J = (0, -5)

E = (5, 2) K = (-4, 0)

F = (6, -4) L = (0, 4)

Study the problem below.

ABCD is a rectangle. If coordinate of A(-2, 3), B(4, 3), and C(4, -4),
what is the coordinate of D?
Let’s mark the known point A, B and C in a Cartesian plane, like below.

Let’s connect A to B to C, like shown below

Since ABCD is a rectangle, the point D must be like shown below.

Therefore the coordinate of D is (-2, 4).

Math Activity: Creating shapes in real Cartesian plane (1 period)
 Make groups of 4 students.
 Create a Cartesian plane on a floor. Use tape, ribbon, or rope as the
axes of Cartesian plan.
 Use the tiles as a square grid to determine the position of points on the
plane.
 Call group 1 to perform the following task:
 Teacher reads three points for 3 students in a group to stand
on, for example (2,2), (4,2), (4,-3).
 The group can have a short discussion to decide which three
group member will stand in which point.
 The three members find their points and stand there.
 Teachers announce that the group need to form a shape, for
example a rectangle.
 The fourth students has to stand in the correct position so the
group create correct shapes. He/she need to say in what
coordinate he is standing.
 If all four students in the group stand in correct position, they get
a point.
 Take turn.
