Learning Activity Sheets (LAS) in Mathematics 10

Name: ________________________________________ Section: ___________

Section: _______________________________________ Date: _____________

Background Information for Learners: This sheet contains activities which will lead the students to
better understand the key concepts of sequences, particularly, arithmetic sequences.

Definition: A geometric sequence is a sequence where each term after the first is obtained by
multiplying the preceding term by a nonzero constant called the common ratio.

The sequence 32, 16, 8, 4, 2, 1 is called a geometric sequence.

The common ratio, r, can be determined by dividing any term in the sequence by the term that
16 1
precedes it. Thus, in the geometric sequence 32, 16, 8, 4, 2, ... , the common ratio is ½ since =
32 2

Given the first term a 1 and the common ratio r of a geometric sequence, the nth term of a geometric
sequence is a n=a1 r n−1

We call the terms between any two given terms of a geometric sequence the geometric means.

Example: Insert 3 geometric means between 5 and 3125.

4 4
Solution: Let a 1= 5 and a 5=3125. We will inserta 2 , a3 a 4. Since a 5=a1 r , then3125=5 r

Solving for the value of r, we get 625=r 4 ∨r ± 5. Now just substitute the values to the formula to
find the sequence. We obtained two values of r, so we have two geometric sequences.

Thus, the sequence is 5, 25, 125, 625, 3125 and 5, -25, 125, - 625, 3125
