Essential Concepts

• Microscopes are essential tools in the study Biology. It helps one to


observe minute objects that are too small to be seen by the naked
eye.
• Microscopes have different parts and functions.
• Various types of microscopes were developed to fully observe the
smallest and slightest details of the specimens.

• Prepare materials needed for the activities.

Specific Vocabulary

• Depth of field - refers to the amount you are able to see within a
microscope. It depends on the objectives, eyepieces and tube factor.
It also refers to the thickness of the plane of focus. Depth of field and
magnification are related because as magnification increases, the
depth of field decreases.
• Magnification - increase in apparent size. The process of cuasing an
object or image to appear larger than it really is, especially by using a
lens or microscope.
• Microscope - a device that uses a lens or system of lenses to produce a
greatly magnified image of an object.
