1. Introduction
This document provides tasks to perform using the Ipsotek VIConfigure software front end. These tasks
are intended to be undertaken after certification training has been completed and are designed to
cement an attendee’s knowledge of the system, or as a refresher lesson after an extended time away
from the system.

2. System Setup and Management

➔ 2.1 Log into the system and change the IP address of the host machine, then log out and log
back into the system using the new IP address.
TIP: Remember to keep the new IP address on the same sub-net otherwise it’ll be more difficult to
log back in.

TIP: You may wish to identify the steps of this task, but not actually perform the change

➔ 2.2 Add a new user with a non-administrator role to the system. If you would like to change the
access this user has, or add a custom access profile, please do.

➔ 2.3 Change the system so that it will automatically reboot every day at 03:00 hours, and will
store alarm video only at 70% compression
TIP: Remember to return to ‘NO REEBOOT’ afterwards

➔ 2.4 Access the event log and identify which services are running and which are not.
TIP: This can also be done, and perhaps more easily, using Service Manager

➔ 2.5 Create a backup of the current system and then restore the system from this backup

3
3. Camera Management and Video Inputs

➔ 3.1 Change a channel’s video source to be a stored video file (if available)
TIP: You may have to upload a video file to the server first

➔ 3.2 Change the video source for any channel to an RTSP stream (if available)
TIP: Try to reach the camera using the same RTSP address under VLC media player first

TROUBLESHOOT: Can you PING the camera, and log into the web interface? Is the camera set
to output RTSP? Is there a password to log in, and if so, have you included this in the RTSP stream?

EXAMPLE: rtsp://<USERNAME>:<PASSWORD>@<IPADDRESS>/<PATH>

➔ 3.3 Create a pre-set preview for a camera view inside the system

4
4. Rules and Templates

➔ 4.1 Create a new rule using “In Zone” to detect a person in an area you specify who has been
loitering for a specified time (e.g. 30 seconds)
TIP: It does not matter if they have been stationary or not, it only matters that they are a person and
within the zone for the time period

➔ 4.2 Create an AI detection alarm on a camera view you specify that will detect a person object

➔ 4.3 Change the rule in 4.2 above to count the number of people, rather than detect them
TIP: Have a look at the preview section for tasks related to visualising alarm output

➔ 4.4 Create a rule to detect a stationary object, stopped for more than 20 seconds, and taking
up at least 20% of the zone area
TIP: Although you could use the “In Zone” zone type, this is not the best suited zone for this activity

➔ 4.5 Using the rule created in the last task (detect stationary objects), modify the rule to detect a
vehicle that remains stationary for a set time, and then is set on fire within five minutes
TIP: This will require more than one condition. Remember that we do not detect fire, only the smoke
created by fire

➔ 4.6 Create a rule that can detect traffic congestion on two out of three lanes of traffic
TIP: This will require the use of the congestion zone type, as well as some careful thought about
the logic to connect everything together. You will need more than one event

➔ 4.7 Use an AI behaviour type and a non AI behaviour type together in a rule of our own creation
TIP: Make sure that the AI zone helps the non-AI zone type process information more accurately

5
➔ 4.8 Create a rule that tracks an object from one area to another area in a scene
TIP: Remember that A to B zone trackers require two zones (A & B) and only the “B” zone will be a
zone tracker type. “Zone A” is often of type “Disabled”. Remember that an A to B zone tracker can
only work correctly if the object can be tracked well, without interruption. Remember to check that
an output zone has been selected.

➔ 4.9 Try to modify the previous rule so that it tracks from Zone A to Zone B, and then back to
Zone A again for a given object type.
TIP: This may require more than one condition if it is to be realistic, as an object may not go
immediately back to Zone A once it reaches Zone B

➔ 4.10 Create an alarm that detects an area that has become too crowded. You will define how
much “too crowded” is for a given scene

➔ 4.11 Using the previous alarm for detecting overcrowded areas, add another condition to then
detect a rapid decrease in crowd density
TIP: This alarm can be created in a number of different ways with the same end effect, however the
most efficient way to achieve this is through logical connections

➔ 4.12 Add an “Auxiliary Input” to a rule that you have created, and connect it to a relay switch
TIP: This Auxiliary Input does not need to actually do anything at this point

➔ 4.13 Modify a rule so that some part of the visual area is not used in tracking or for detection
within the rule

6
5. Actions, Schedules, Priorities & Inputs

➔ 5.1 Change the system so that an alarm is sent to a Video Management System (VMS) of your
choice
TIP: This is done in server settings

➔ 5.2 Change one of your rules so that it will only be run from 9pm until 9am (during the night)
every day
TIP: This involves changing the schedule NOT the rule

➔ 5.3 Change the priority of a rule

➔ 5.4 Create two rules of any kind, and send a signal (action) from one rule to another, so that the
second rule will not trigger until the first rule has been triggered

TIP: This will involve “Basic” actions and “Auxiliary Inputs”

➔ 5.5 Apply actions and schedules to a single rule that will send an e-mail alert during the day,
and zoom the camera into the alarm area during the night

7
6. Object Classes

➔ 6.1 Create a new class of object (for example “Airplane”), with appropriate dimensions, and use
this new class within a rule, so that only this class of object is detected
TIP: Remember to apply your changes within the classification section

➔ 6.2 Modify an existing classification type

7. Preview Window

➔ 7.1 In the preview section of VIConfigure, select the checkbox labelled “View Moving Areas”.
Using a live or video stream, observe what is shown to be moving, and what does not show up
as moving. Can you explain why different areas are labelled as moving or not moving? Are there
any areas that are labelled strangely?

➔ 7.2 Now select “View Metadata”. Can you explain the link between View Moving Areas and
Metadata? Are there any activities that are being mislabelled in the metadata, and if so, can you
explain why?

➔ 7.3 Assuming you have an overcrowding alarm configured (as in 4.10), can you visualise the
current crowding levels in the scene?
TIP: This is not asking to visualise the overcrowding alarm, but rather the raw percentage of moving
objects in the scene

➔ 7.4 Can you reset the scene background or counting information?

TIP: Try right-clicking on the camera views inside the preview window area
