Individualized Professional Development Plan

Name: Roma Weil Major: Middle/Secondary Education & Mathematics

Minor: Psychology (added this as a minor but I don’t think I’ll have time to
accomplish it)

Start with your WHY: Why are you pursuing this degree? What do you want the outcome to be? How are you
going to work toward making that outcome possible? **Is the outcome directly related to your WHY?
WHY: Ever since eighth grade, I thought I could be a teacher. In math class, my teacher showed me that having the ability

to explain how to solve a problem is a key component of being a math teacher. After Algebra II, I knew being a math

teacher was a career I wanted to pursue. I really liked my Algebra II teacher. His name is Patrick Bontrager, and I knew I

wanted to be like him. After taking ED199, ED299, and ED419, I realized that math teachers are needed, and the

traditional way of teaching math will not cut it. Teachers need to be able to explain the reason why mathematical concepts

work. Many times teachers expect students to memorize information, but memorization is not a good way to learn math.

Students need to understand the concepts because applying concepts is more advanced. After taking ED227, I learned

about what it meant to be a developmentally appropriate and culturally responsive teacher. We did an assignment about

what is developmentally appropriate to ask of 11-18 year olds based on their assets and needs. This assignment showed

me how different the ages are. I also learned that it is important to build strong, positive relationships with students. I
believe that all students can learn regardless of gender, socio-economic status, physical characteristics, language, and

ethnic or cultural backgrounds.

What: By obtaining this degree, I want to be a high school Algebra I or Algebra II teacher. I really want to work at Father

Ryan High School, which is where I went to high school. I want to teach there because I know that the teachers truly care

about their students, and they will help in any way they can to help a student succeed. I want to be part of the new

generation of teachers who will make schools better for students' learning. I want to have the characteristics that it takes

to be a developmentally appropriate and culturally responsive teacher, and I saw what these characteristics are by

watching the different case studies that Dr. McAllister assigned for us to watch.

How: To make that outcome possible, I am going to take all my required courses. As an education major, I have certain

classes that are supposed to make me understand being an educator better. Next semester, I am going to take Core II,

which consists of ED299 and ED242. ED299 is Integrated Foundations of Teaching and ED 242 is Foundations of Special

Education. When I get to my junior and senior years, I will student teach at different schools in Indianapolis. As a

mathematics major, I have to complete multiple math classes that will enhance my understanding of math. Next semester,

I am going to take Thinking Mathematically, which is actually an education class for math majors. After my freshman year,

I have to take classes like Linear Algebra, Basics of Advanced Mathematics, and Calculus and Analytic Geometry 3,
along with many more. Hopefully, I will earn good grades in all of these classes, which will allow me to advance in my

education. I want to become involved in different organizations that the College of Education has so that I can become a

more well-rounded learner. I still need to become involved in different organizations that the College of Education has.

Description of professional development activity Timeframe Connection to your stated objective
completed
1. Enroll in GHS204, GHS205, and Summer 2020 These classes will take care of the GHS Requirement and the
SP204 LAS requirement of taking two 200-level language classes.

2. Enroll in CS142, ED227, MA200, Fall 2020 The computer science class, education class, and math
MA208, and TI244 classes are required for my majors, and the text and ideas
class is required by Butler for all students.
3. Be more active in SEA ongoing This is a great association for CoE students to be a part of,
and it is definitely a good resource as a future educator.
4. Continue involvement in Delta ongoing At the beginning of the spring semester, I joined TriDelta,
Delta Delta and so far, it has been one of the best decisions I have made
at Butler. TriDelta will provide me with opportunities for a
lifetime. Participating in St. Jude fundraisers is an activity
that I am excited to do more.
5. Facetimed with advisor (Lori March 23, 2020 I facetimed Dr. Desautels to talk about the classes I wanted
Desautels) to schedule classes to take in the fall of 2020. She is a great resource in the CoE,
and talk about adding and she was open to talking about my idea of adding
Psychology as a minor Psychology as a minor. This would increase my workload
quite a bit, so I am not sure how realistic it is, but Psychology
fascinates me.

From Beliefs about Learners PowerPoint:

I believe that the ability to learn is more influenced by personal factors than by innate ability because students have to be motivated
to learn. They might be able to learn, but they have to want to in addition to being able to.
I believe that children are inherently good, industrious, curious, and eager to learn. I think being curious is a characteristic that
everyone has, and everyone wants to continue learning.
I do not believe that learning is naturally pleasant and an intrinsically rewarding activity all of the time; however, if the person
teaching makes the content pleasant to learn then learning itself can be rewarding.
I believe that students learn by constructing meaning and through active experience. Students need to be actively engaging with
concepts being taught to construct meaning, so those two things go together.
I believe that all students can be successful learners, but may require different paces or different paths. No student is the same so
each child needs a plan that works for them, but every learner can be successful.
I believe that all progress in learning is valuable and motivating, but I do not believe that lack of progress is demotivating. Lack of
progress means that students are not understanding whatever is being taught and can be seen as an indication that the teacher
needs to explain it further or in a different way.
I believe that student input is valuable and has worth, students are entitled to be in control of their learning, yet still need the
guidance of adults. Students’ input helps teachers improve.
I believe that students need and desire power over their own learning and are motivated by the prospect of choice and the
opportunity for personal expression. Students will become uninterested in learning if it doesn’t fascinate them.
I believe that the unique nature of the individual is valuable, and students’ personal ‘signatures’ bring rich and wonderful diversity to
classrooms. Every child is unique, and this is important because it brings different views in the classroom.
I believe that the acting out of these beliefs by teachers and principals will improve learning and provide more success for more
students than the traditional system.
