Anne Curtis opens up about

having gone through depression

Celebrating a successful 21-year-old career in the industry,
Anne Curtis continues to bring smiles to millions of Filipinos
worldwide through It’s Showtime. But despite all her
success, Anne has also had gone through several highs and
lows in her more than two decades as a highly-respected
celebrity. While she keeps a jolly personality onscreen, little
did people know that Anne had also gone through
depression at one point in her career.
"I've had my fair share of depression and anxiety - a lot has
to do with, in fact with the press and having the stress of
press when I was going through something very, very tough. So a lot of anxiety built up na
parang feeling ko ayoko nang humarap sa tao. It happened really, really bad. But when you
have the perfect support team around you, and you don't let it eat you up inside, you'll be
able to get through it," she said, revealing how the press reports affected her life.

"I blocked everything. I didn't open my social media for about a month or two. As in I
blocked everything out," the It's Showtime host, sharing how she got through it.

The Buy Bust star also gave a powerful message to all those who are going through
something in their lives.

"I think it's really important to not keep it to yourself. You seek help from your friends.
Don't be ashamed. You seek help from your family, from people who love you. You can
even seek professional help if you are uncomfortable talking to family members and
friends about it. But the most important thing is to seek help," she stated.

problems at the time.

din ako na binubuhay yung sarili ko. Sobrang na-depress
ako. May time na iniisip ko talagang mag-suicide.”
SUICIDE ATTEMPTS
While she never really got hospitalized to due a suicide attempt, Ryza related that
there were times when she would hurt herself because of her overwhelming
depression.
“May times na sinasaktan ko yung sarili ko, pero hindi yung sinusugatan talaga. Like,
kung anong mahawakan ko. Before pa [nangyari], may dumbbell tapos ipupukpok
ko sa ulo ko. May times din na ballpen naman…”
“Mag-isa lang din ako na binubuhay yung sarili ko. Sobrang na-depress ako. May
time na iniisip ko talagang mag-suicide.”
OVERCOMING HER DEPRESSION
With the help of a fan, Ryza took up painting as a therapeutic tool to release her

HOW HUGH LAURIE BEAT DEPRESSION
Hugh Laurie is best known for playing Doctor House; a
walking-wounded medical genius whose brilliance and
brokenness is deeply intertwined. Like his character,
Laurie has wrestled with bouts of major depression.
Laurie came to prominence and fame on the back of a
famous theatrical review in Cambridge, where he
teamed up with Emma Thompson and Stephen Fry.
Curiously both actors battled severe depression during
their lives.
Laurie has had bouts with major depression, also called
clinical depression. His depression, which he calls
“heavyweight unhappiness” began in his late teens. He refuses to take medication
for his condition but admits of a course of St John’s Wort.
Laurie concluded he had a problem with depression when driving in a demolition
derby charity in 1996. In spite of explosions and crashing happening close to and
around him he was not stimulated. Instead, he was bored. This lack of reaction
made his flat mood noticeable to him. His reactions were not congruent or
consistent with external stimuli and thought something was amiss into his head.
It affected everything – my family and friends. I was a pain in the arse to have
around. I was miserable and self-absorbed. It’s actually selfish to be depressed and
not try and do anything about it. *
Hugh Laurie is prone to depression because he struggles to acknowledge his fine
achievements in life. According to the London Evening Standard, he has a tendency
to under rate his achievements and spends much time worrying if the projects he is
involved with are going to be successful or not. In our first podcast on CBT and
Depression we looked at how depression is not just negative thinking about oneself,
it is often failing to acknowledge and enjoy legitimate achievements in life.
Depressed people can react to success with a sense of guilt, as if they were a fraud
that will eventually get discovered or “found out”. Often it doesn’t matter if you’ve
climbed Everest and landed on the Moon – a depressed person doesn’t get
satisfaction from achievements.

Brad Pitt: 'I suffered depression'
Brad Pitt has spoken candidly about how he dealt with depression in the 1990s before
turning his life around when he witnessed poverty in Morocco.

Brad Pitt suffered from depression because he smoked too much marijuana

The 48-year-old Hollywood star made some of his biggest movies during the decade,
including Fight Club, 12 Monkeys, and Seven, but said he became "sick of myself" towards
the end of it.

He told the Hollywood Reporter: "I was hiding out from the celebrity thing, I was smoking
way too much dope. I was sitting on the couch and just turning into a doughnut, and I really
got irritated with myself. I got to: 'What's the point? I know better than this.'"

Pitt added: "I used to deal with depression, but I don't now, not this decade – maybe last
decade. But that's also figuring out who you are. I see it as a great education, as one of the
seasons or a semester: 'This semester I was majoring in depression.'

"I was doing the same thing every night and numbing myself to sleep, the same routine.
Couldn't wait to get home and hide out. But that feeling of unease was growing and one
night I just said, 'This is a waste.'"

His decision to "get off the couch" was spurred by a trip to Casablanca where he saw
"poverty to an extreme I had never witnessed before." Pitt said: "It stuck with me."

"Brad Pitt's story shows that it is possible to recover from depression, which will give many
people renewed hope. We commend Brad Pitt for speaking so bravely and openly about his
experiences."

Pitt received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor earlier this week for his role in the baseball
film Moneyball. The actor also suggested he and Anjelina Jolie, his partner of seven years,
are thinking about marriage. He told The Hollywood Reporter: "We'd actually like to, and it
seems to mean more and more to our kids."
