ABSTRACT

The researcher looked at the effects of rabbit production on residential areas of

San Ildefonso, Bulacan. One of the most important processes in creating maps and

providing information is geotagging. This study concentrated on rabbit farms, one of the

newest suppliers of meat. The majority of the nation's communities still do not have

records of these farms, and maintaining those records takes a lot of time and effort. This

study demonstrated a technique for creating themed maps specifically population map

and tilt map by utilizing the capabilities of a quantum geographic information system

(QGIS). To get the locations needed for the properties required to create the map,

geotagged locations of rabbit farm owners were acquired. Meanwhile, to assess the

effects of the rabbit farms in San Ildefonso, Bulacan, a survey was conducted. Through

average weighted mean and frequency percentage, the effects of rabbit farms were

analyzed in terms of three categories. The results show a 1.04 and 1.11 average weighted

mean score in nuisance and health respectively, illustrating that the rabbit farms near the

neighborhood have no adverse effects on the locality. On the other hand, a 4.27 average

weighted mean score was noted in the benefit category, indicating a positive impact on

those in the neighborhood.

CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Rationale

A map is a symbolic depiction of a location's specific qualities, usually drawn on

a flat surface, and serve as the visual representation of information about the world. It

demonstrates the size and shape of countries, the locations of landmarks, and the

distances between them. It also can depict topics like settlement patterns and their

dispersal across the globe and capable of displaying the exact positions of houses and

streets in a city neighborhood (Hunt, 2022).

As the population increases, they need to cope with what is new and what is

needed for our environment. Based on Statista Global consumer survey in thirty-nine (39)

countries, an average of eighty six percent (86%) said that their diet contained meat. It

means that there is a big difference in people who eat vegetables than who eats livestock

meats. As result the supply of pork, beef and chicken is dwindling and alternative meats

are needed. Based on the study of Mazmanyan (2020), rabbit meat is one of the good

alternatives for meat. It also has higher level of protein, with about double the amount of

all amino acids and has lower cholesterol levels than chicken and almost half the

cholesterol levels found in beef.

In the Philippines, rabbits have mostly been nurtured as pets and not as meat

sources. But with the escalating prices of pork and chicken products, many people

considered rabbit as their alternative. The production of its meat has only recently

become popular because of the industrialist who expanded and informed the people that

2
rabbit meat can be eaten due to the influence of other countries. Since a rabbit’s growth

cycle is very short, they efficiently convert food into meat. They reproduce quickly, more

so than pigs, goats, or sheep. In addition, their meat is loaded with protein, just like

chicken.

The eating of rabbit meat is supported by the United Nations as well. In fact, the

Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) notes that it is very nutrient-dense, low in fat

and cholesterol, and abundant in protein, vitamins, and other minerals (Dar, 2022).

The researchers found out that the town of San Ildefonso, Bulacan did not have a

centralized information about the location of rabbit farms and the number of rabbits

within the municipality based on their city hall’s data. In connection to this, the

researcher started to geotag each and every rabbit raiser that is in the area of San

Ildefonso in order to better and accurate data about the coordinate of each rabbit raiser in

this municipality for future programs and researches. In this study, the researchers

determine the number of rabbits and rabbit raisers which was used to create the map. In

addition, the researchers conducted a survey to know if rabbit raising has effects to the

community with in relation to nuisance, health, and benefit to the community.

Objectives of the Study

The general objectives of the study arise to geotag the rabbit raiser in San

Ildefonso, Bulacan.

Specifically, it aims to:

1. Map the locations of rabbit-raisers.

2
2. Create a population map of the rabbit.

3. Know whether raising rabbits has effects to the community of San Ildefonso specially

in terms of;

a. Nuisance

b. Health

c. Benefit

Scope and Limitation of the Study

This study will focus on mapping and evaluation of rabbit production with respect

to nuisance, health and benefit to the community of every rabbit-raisers in San Ildefonso.

Researcher will generate a population map showing the number of rabbits per barangay.

Also the researcher generate tilt map to pinpoint the location of the rabbit raisers by

geotagging their location using map marker application. The participants in this study

were limited to rabbit raiser that only have thirty (30) rabbits and above and the

respondents was their neighbors within 100-meter radius.

Time and Location of the Study

The research was conducted in San Ildefonso, Bulacan, it is a first class

municipality in the province. This area has set its sights on affirming its critical role in

the country’s food production after the government and private sector broke ground for

the establishment of the Philippines’ first Rabbit Research and Development Center in

San Ildefonso town. This study was conducted during the first semester of academic year

2022-2023.

Figure 2. Conceptual Paradigm

4
Figure 2. Illustrates the conceptual paradigm of the study. This IPO show how

researcher will start the mapping and assessing of rabbit farms in the municipality of San

Ildefonso. The diagram contains the preparation, processing, and output of creating

population map and tilt map by evaluating the rabbit farms and determining how the

rabbit farms can affect the nearby community. The researchers coordinated to every

barangay official in order to request permission that the researcher will conduct a survey

and get the exact locations of each rabbit raiser in their barangay. In processing, the

thematic map and tilt map is generated through all the latitude and longitude obtained

from the geotagged rabbit raisers. The Map Marker Application was used to geotag the

exact locations of all the rabbit farms. The evaluation of the survey was made on how the

residents near the rabbit farms will answer the answers on the questionnaire.
