CHAPTER I

The Problem and It’s Background

Background of the study

The generation today was highly exposed to a certain devices. The platform of social

media has been widen through different purposes though it can be helpful or not. We use

social media to communicate, to widen our understanding, to entertainment and to know

what’s happening around the world. Social networks are now so well established, that

there is a core 'top five' social networks that don't change much from year-to-year. But, as

we see the most popular social media sites vary a lot by level of usage in different

demographics. Understanding these differences in popularity of different social networks

is really important when targeting specific audiences. When comparing the most popular

social networks it's best to review them by active account usage, not just the number of

user accounts. We'll also see that some social networks are growing more rapidly than

others while some are now in decline. Each year, near the start of the year, We Are Social

update their massive global compendium of stats which gives some great insights into the

world of social media. It's particularly interesting how some countries are diverging in

terms of social media. Here in the Philippines According to the report year 2019, there

are 76 million active Filipino social media users 71 percent of the entire population who

spend an average of four hours a day on different social media platforms. Quite the

dissonance considering the country’s lacklustre internet speed which averages at 15

Mbps. Internet Inaccessibility Plagues “Social Media Capital of the World” The

Philippines has been called the social media capital of the world, as millions of Filipinos
spend an average of almost four hours a day on social media sites, particularly Facebook,

the highest social media use in the world. Facebook, though rather stagnant in its growth,

still takes the lead as most visited social media site and overall website with 75 million

monthly active Filipino users. This just goes to show that, for Filipinos, Facebook is

synonymous with the internet. The number of internet users worldwide in 2019

is 4.388 billion, up 9.1% year-on-year. The number of social media users worldwide in

2019 is 3.484 billion, up 9% year-on-year. The number of mobile phone users in 2019

is 5.112 billion, up 2% year-on-year. The evolution of the internet technology has led to

its use as the best medium for interacting with friends and family all over the world.

There are two types of social media users; digital natives and digital immigrants. Digital

natives are the ones who were born after 1980, they came to this world when the digital

media existed. However, digital immigrants are the ones who were born before 1980 and

adapted their lives to digital media (AntonSon and Christopher, 2014). Social media

platforms vary from Web blogs, to micro-sharing platforms, to lifestreams to social

networks and much more (AntonSon and Christopher, 2014). Today most youths posses

Facebook accounts. Students are so engrossed with the social media that they are almost

24 hours online. Even in classrooms and lectures theaters, it has been observed that some

students are always busy pinging, uses facebook while lectures are on. People tend to be

socialize to media than to socialize outdoor. Other students just tend to stay at home and

use social media and aftaid to go outside and interact with anybody. Accourding to the

report in 2010, social network websites grab attention of the students and diverts their

attention surfing all day in the internet, non-educational and inappropriate actions

including useless chatting. Whereas on the other hand, (Licardi, Ounnas, Massey,
Kinunnen, Midy and Sakar. 2007) reviewed that the students are socially connected with

each other for sharing their experiences and to conversation on several topics. Tinto

(1997) argued that extracurricular and academic activities are not enough to satisfy some

student those who are suffered by social internet isolation.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to better understand using social media. We also conduct this study to

know the cause and effect and how it can affect every health of teenagers in Grade 11 of

Jose Panganiban Camarines Norte. Qualitative Method will be used to gain in-depth sight

into the said problem.

this study.

Assumptions

We defined social media as obsession and advancement technology that targets younger

generations in particular. Technology plays as a key factor in most lives, especially in

social media. Among the most popular in social media including Facebook, Instagram,

Twitter and YouTube all with the purpose to share our thoughts, experiences, feelings or

view some personal information’s. Also, communicating with others or to meet new

people and researching or making thesis and finding information commonly on social

media for us to be done researches accurately. Also, we have many ways when we are

expressing our thoughts, feelings and experience. Some people they want to choose
writing their feelings in their own journals. But, look several of people have their own

journal. But most of us, we shared our thoughts through social media. In this generation

and to the upcoming generation, the technology is getting more advance and helpful,

especially to those researchers. They need social media to have more information about

their topic research and to entertain themselves and to inform about something. Also,

when we are communicating through text or even in video chatting we use social media.

Social Media is an influencing technology to the world; we just need to know our

limitation when we are using it.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

This chapter is a presentation and discussion of related literature and studies by

foreign and local author which have a direct relation on the study. It deliberates and

discusses the concept, theories, findings and opinions that are requisite in conceptualizing

the study.

Related Literature

The literature provides various theories, opinions, insights and findings from

foreign and local authors that are vital and essential for this study.

Before the appearance of social media a university could assess the strength of

student engagement within wider university community through offline participation in

student clubs and societies (Berger & Wild, 2016). However the social media has

increase the complexity surrounding. Social media is that the interaction among

individuals within which they create, share information and concepts in communities and

also in networks. Social media depend upon mobile phone and internet-based

technologies for developing most inter connected platforms which help people and

groups to debate create, share out, and convert generated content Student could be

a scholar, or person connects to educational complex. In our Pakistan twelve-year school

is fall in categoryof3 stages: Primary level, Secondary level and better level school. It

contains5 years of a student to graduate through Primary level, 3 years for Secondary
level and a pair of years for higher level school. academic degree is of 4 years and after

that2 years of degree. Basically this study is about how social Media networks effects the

performance of scholars that how their grade points affected through using such

networks. Some most typically used social Medias are Facebook, Skype, twitter,

YouTube, Google. in several countries an oversized number of researchers are work on

this issue to judge this increasing trend among students. Most of the studies presented

the ends up in against Social Media and argued that it's negative results for student and

younger generation. in line with this study social media has emerging positive effect

on the scholars and causes for his or her high results grade. These studies also argued that

students spent most of their time on such activates and simply completed their home

assignments and Projects. Students having age bracket of 23 were notice to love more to

use text messaging and web calling instant messaging by a big margin. An annual survey

of ECAR made a set of knowledge and chooses undergraduates of 100 universities and

colleges in USA. per their statistics usage of social networking in not much changed for

young students in an exceedingly survey of 2007, in older students a dramatic increase of

social networking. As in 2007, up to 90.1 % of scholars having age bracket of 18-24

year-olds used sites of social networking and in 2010; this ratio had increased by three

points only. As compare to age bracket of 25-29 year olds students, increase in social

networking in this period increased by 38 points as from 57.6 % to 85.7 %. In contrast

Twitter, also, promotes social networking among students. It may be use to  increase

communication skills and thinking among them. Domizi(2013) a seminar is conducted in

graduate students during which they were told to use Twitter and weekly post tweets so

as to increase discussions of classroom. subsequently Students used Twitter account to

attach with their content and with other students. additionally, students having remarks

about twitter is that twitter is beneficial personally and professionally. Junco, Heibergert,

and Lokenet al (2011) a study is conducted on 132 students so as to look at the

connection of social media and engagement of scholars with it& social media and

grades of scholars. to look at this relationship the scholars were divided into two groups,

one group use twitter and also the other group didn't use twitter account. it absolutely

was wont to make discussions about study material, organize the study groups in an

exceedingly manner, also post the announcements of sophistication, and

remain connected with class fellows. Junco and his co-workers (2011) surprised that the

scholars of Twitter group achieve greater GPAs and better scores than the opposite group.

Shambare, R et al. (2012) Conduct a study on Social networking habits among students

their study indicates that such Medias most ordinarily utilized by Younger‟s and

Facebook is most generally using by an oversized number of communities and have

multiple effects on student's life. The high speed and quickly approach to internet and

also the development of smart phone technology are most vital drivers behind the

adoption and connectivity with social networking websites and conclude that SNS

enhance their knowledge level. Ahmad,A(2011)their study showed that social networking

sites have number of benefits for his or her users, it enable the community to

stay connected with their peers and relink with old ones and help to search out new

friends in step with your interest from all round the and an outsized number of persons

are linking with these networks. Hence the network of social media is growing globally.

Heeter, (2006) a study at University of Michigan State give information about technology

use in educational activity, particularly in respect to faculty. This survey interprets

teaching and learning habits for employees members online, students that are graduate

and undergraduate are included. About 65 you look after faculty and students both read

blogs but here faculty for private information was more likely read them. Students post

for both educational and private proposes. Faculty used online photo sharing

programs quite students like Flicker, but about 50 you look after both groups used it.

Students used Facebook 70 percent while faculty used but 10 percent of either Facebook

or MySpace. Students send text message more likely. Lenhart (2009), for online

users hottest is social networking a bunch age of 25 years old students which ratio

decreased for every succeeding group 10 % or for adults isless over 55. in November

2011 A paper is released which stated that 66 you look after “adults” use differing

kinds of social media which is MySpace, Facebook, and percent use Twitter Kim et al.

(2009) roles of international students are support through internet and social network

involvement of parent-child relationship but it was observed that there are some students

who do not have a high parental relationship when they are individually scored.

According to the study of The use of Tamayo , Dela Cruz May (2014) states that The use

of social media by students directly affects their activities and academic performances at

Related Studies
The related studies show the result of various studies from foreign and local

authors that are vital and essential for this study.

Foreign

Ezekiel, Ruth and Leo (2013) asserted that understudies are dependent on the

utilization of online networking in Nigeria and this takes a large portion of their

occasions. The creators kept up that understudies talk even in profoundly composed spots

of reveres like chapels, mosques and even in auditoriums. They opined that internet based

life is a hindrance to scholarly execution; as most understudies that participate in web-

based social networking perform ineffectively in their scholastic exhibitions. According

to Segaren (2019) context is show how broadened conversation can be directed through a

specialy-made Facebook gathering. Simultaneously, they expanded their commitment

and empower collaboration, lessening sentiments of segregation which is one of the

significant difficulties of separation learning courses. Online life is additionally

extraordinary for look into, offering valuable crowd and observing instruments.

Understudies, can utilize surveys, reviews or even simply present straightforward inquiry

on check how individuals feel about a specific point. Dlamini (2019) stated that learning

can interface with understudies through internet based life systems, for example,

Facebook, Google Plus gatherings, and Youtube. These channels can be utilized to

convey grounds news, make declarations and furnish understudies with valuable data.

This fabricates commitment between the school and understudies which may handle

numerous understudies issues through the gathering collaboration. Foundations can share

steady and positive posts that arrived at all understudies that are associated with the

systems and pages. By means of Bolaji (2017) he asserts that students joining in such
group of Whatsapp, Twitter, Facebook and others will help the students to have the

access of quality as at when needed. According to Willbold (2019) explains that Students

are using various online tools to cater to different requirements. It will not be wrong to

say that social media and education goes hand in hand in the modern world. Therefore, it

can be claimed that social media platforms, enabling free voice and video calls, the

sharing of documents, links and any other type of information can be highly effective in

improving the academic performance and students learning.

Local

Facebook, Messenger and other apps are the most popular social networking site

nowadays. Where in many people specially students are actively engaged with it. Social

networking communities will definitely stayed because of its billions users. In addition,

students gathered a lot of information but those information sometimes are lie or fake so

that students cannot imagined that all information are based from facts or reliable that

they can add to their knowledge. In other side there are a lot of negative effects whenever

students losing self-control many students become lazy, lack of attitude and time wasted

due to over usage of social networking sites and online games as mobile legends, clash of

clans and etc. According to cheever (2009) there are five signs that may signal one has

type of social networking addiction 1) when one is sleeping late at night spending time on

social network. 2) when a person spend more than an hour in social networking sites. 3)

when one disregards work including school works. 4) also being stressed when you start

your day without even using social network. 5) and one of the most popular sign that you

really became addicted in social media is when you start break your schedules and

focuses your mind only in social media.

Synthesis in the state of the Art

In the study of Rejie (2016) he stated that social media has a beneficial effects on

their academic performance, academic needs and skills enhancement in networking that it

will help the to gain knowledge. And this was further supported by Willbold (2019) in

one study he to has conducted which he explains that students has a cater tool different

requirements that enables students to find concrete information online and also they can

improve their literacy, communication and reading skills and this can highly effective in

enhancing the academic performance and students learning. However in the case of Dela

Cruz and May (2014) states that the social media by students directly affects their

activities and academic performance at school. It can also affects the focus and attention

of a student in such manner they tend to aim more learning’s on social media rather than
learning lessons and doing homework. This circumstances driving them on out number of

school presence consume larger time using social media freely. In addition, Branzuela

and Bete et.al. (2019) that the students who use social media irresponsibly gain most of

the negative effects than who use it positively. According to the study of Doque and San

Antonio (2016) that some students do not have high parental relationship when they are

individually scored. Hence, the synthesis for the previous studies can conclude that there

are negative and positive impacts on students when using social media and it have a great

effects for their academic life and performance.
