WEEK: 5 QUARTER: 1

TOPIC: Research Problem and Research Question

The ultimate goal of the research is not only to propose ways of studying things, people,
places, and events but also to discover new practices, strategies, or techniques in solving a
problem.
Research Problem - is a statement about an area of concern, a condition to be improved, a
difficulty to be eliminated, or a troubling question that exists in scholarly literature, in theory, or in
practice that points to the need for meaningful understanding and deliberate investigation.
Background of the Problem- the background of your study will provide the context to the
information discussed throughout the research paper. Background information may include both
important and relevant issues. In addition, the background of the study will discuss your research
problem, rationale, and research questions.
Research Questions - A research question is 'a question that a research project sets out to
answer'. Choosing a research question is an essential element of both quantitative and
qualitative research. ... Good research questions seek to improve knowledge on an important
topic, and are usually narrow and specific.
- Research questions aim at investigating specific aspects of research problem.
- To give your study a clear direction, you have to break this big, overreaching, general
question into several smaller or specific research questions.
- The specific questions, also called sub-problems, identify or direct you to the exact aspect
of the problem that your study has to focus on.

Guidelines in Formulating Research Questions

1. Establish a clear relation between the research questions and the problem or topic.
2. Base your research questions on your Review of Related Literature (RRL) because existing
published works help you get good background knowledge of the research problem and help you
gauge the people’s current understanding or familiarity about the topic, as well as the extent of
their knowledge and interest in it.
3. Formulate questions that can arouse your curiosity and surprise you with your discoveries and
findings.
4. State your research questions in such a way that they include dependent and independent
variables referred to by the theories, principles, or concepts underlying your research work.
5. Let the set of research questions or sub-problems be preceded by one question expressing the
main problem of the research.
6. Avoid asking research questions that are answerable with “yes” or “no” and use the “how”
questions only in a quantitative research.
7. Be guided by the acronym SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, time-bound) in
formulating the research questions. Applying SMART, you must deal with exact answers and
observable things, determine the extent or limit of the data collected, be aware of the timeframe
and completion period of the study, and endeavor to have your research study arrive at a
particular conclusion that is indicative of what are objective, factual, or real in this world.

WEEK: 5 QUARTER: 1

NAME OF STUDENT: Jasper B. De Guzman SUBJECT:Practical Research 1

GRADE LEVEL AND STRAND: 12-STEM SCORE:

Direction: Keeping in mind what you have learned from this lesson, do the following:

1. On a piece of paper, make a list of some problems in your environment that need immediate
solutions. (At least 5)
Housing Problem
The cost of home construction, toxins in most housing materials, and durability of homes in
the face of more frequent natural disasters are areas of concern for many people. Today
though, natural home building can address all these challenges and it’s becoming easier and
more common.
Food Problem
Food in most communities is no longer grown or raised locally and is commonly sprayed
with poisons and raised with hormones. Home gardens, community gardens, and markets that
offer locally produced foods are the solution. The larger the community is that supports or
contributes to these solutions, the more effective and comprehensive they can be.
Educational Problem
Education isn’t an area most people think of when they think about sustainability, but many
communities are unhappy with the quality, available options, or educational approach of the
educational sources available to them.
Transportation Problem
Transportation is another common community challenge. It includes cost of ownership and
maintenance, parking and other space needs, and vehicle contributions to the climate crisis.
Co-ownership, ride sharing, alternative transportation (bike, scooter, moped, etc.), and public
transportation are all common solutions to this. The larger the community participating, the
more effective and convenient these solutions all are.
Poverty
Creating jobs in poverty-ridden communities allows individuals to pull themselves out
of poverty. This solution to global poverty is arguably one of the most effective. Federal
governments can achieve this by rebuilding their infrastructures, developing renewable energy
sources, renovating abandoned housing and raising the minimum wage.

2. Choose one problem in the list. Based on this problem you selected, identify your research
topic, give or describe the justification/reasons behind your decision to do a research work, and
mention, too, the benefits and the beneficiaries of your research work.
Choosing Poverty as main topic is too common to use, I’ll go for Housing Problem.
The main reason why I chose this problem is simply because even if it is a very small problem,
there’s still differences, It will still affect the community. Community Housing Solutions provides
home repairs to homeowners. Supporting neighbors and neighborhoods. With a skilled
construction staff and volunteer groups from the community, they are helping the homeowners
who fall below specific income levels to make needed repairs making their homes warmer, drier
and safer.

3. Formulate one general or “mother question” to reflect your research problem or topic.
How to deal with abandoned and vacant property?
4. Banking on whatever background knowledge you have about your chosen topic, formulate
five research questions or sub-problems that are closely related to the general question.
1. What is the purpose or purposes served by exactions?
2. What are the basic steps for the valuation of the property which code is used for the same?
3. In what way are we going to get a fund for this solution?
4. As a youth or student, In what way are you going to help your community in this problem?
5. This solution is for whom?

NOTE: BE READY TO PRESENT IT TO YOUR RESEARCH ADVISER! GOOD LUCK! 😊
