What Do We Have in Common?
What Do We Have in Common?
Objective
Factor polynomials with common monomial factor.
What do we
have in
common?
Concepts
To multiply a monomial and a polynomial, we use the distributive property to multiply each term of the
polynomial by the monomial. To factor means we do the reverse and we look for the common factor.
The common factor is a term with the greatest possible coefficient and the variable with the least
power. Example, the common factor of 15b3 and 20b7 = 5b3.
4. Represent the area A of the shaded region using an expression in factored form.
a. b. r
5. Suppose the profit is given by the equation P=15 y 2 +3 y where y is the amount of item that was sold
(in thousand). Write P in factored form and find the profit if y=4 .
