During my tenure at a construction site, we faced many accident reports.

While
working on the maintenance of an equipment, it had to be switched off by the
worker to prevent accidents. However, during night time and rainy season the
signs were not effective due to low visibility and some other worker may
unknowingly start the equipment leading to accidents.

Our team brainstormed on the problem and finally came up with an innovative
solution. Whenever someone worked on the maintenance of an equipment, we
asked him to lock the switchboard of the equipment. The key would remain with
him till he was working with it. If more than 1 worker was working than everyone
involved would individually put locks on the switchboard. Hence no one else
could start the equipment even accidentally.

This led to large decrease in the number of accidents especially during nights and
rainy seasons.

I was told to perform heat load calculations for air conditioning equipment for a
project. I noticed that our company used high end paid software for performing
calculations for which we incurred cost based on the usage of the software.

During my B.Tech, I had studied techniques of performing similiar calculations

using simple tools such as Excel. I believed I could prepare a simple tool which
could be used in future projects also. I approached the HOD of our department
and told him about my idea. He asked me to prepare a standard template for the
company and then check the accuracy using data from previous projects.

I was able to hence create a standard tool for performing calculations using my
learnings from my engineering which eliminated the need of using paid software.
This is where I went beyond what was expected from me.

During my internship in my 3rd year of engineering at L&T, I was given a project

which had very little application of Mechanical Engineering in it. I was
disappointed and approached my mentor for a change as I wanted something
closer to my area of interest.
However, my mentor refused for a change in project and explained me that as a
professional, I should see this as a learning opportunity and I should try to adapt
as per requirements of this project. I should be versatile and easily adapt to
different roles and responsibilities. He further stated that not always in life I
would get projects as per my likings. As I worked on it, I started appreciating the
project and was able to provide valuable insights.

This advice helped me take up a wide variety of roles during my job without
hesitation which benefitted me immensely.
