LANGUAGE, GRAMMAR,
AND PUNCTUATION

Department of Education
BASIC PRINCIPLES OF SCRIPTWRITING
FOR TELEVISION

Write as you speak in simple

sentences; formal grammar and
syntax are inappropriate and avoid
highly specialized terms, unless they
are explained.

Test your script as you write – run

your eyes as you murmur under
your breath and read the script
aloud.

BASIC PRINCIPLES OF SCRIPTWRITING
FOR TELEVISION

Use precise, clear language.

Write for one listener – not a
crowd. Treat them as an individual
and you will build a loyal
audience.

BASIC PRINCIPLES OF SCRIPTWRITING
FOR TELEVISION

Write thoughtfully, slowly in small

chucks.
Give the listeners enough time to
chew the message over.

Department of Education
BASIC PRINCIPLES OF SCRIPTWRITING
FOR TELEVISION

Think of the listener. Assess the

script from the position/point of
view of the listener.

Department of Education
BASIC PRINCIPLES OF SCRIPTWRITING
FOR TELEVISION

Avoid abstractions – show, don’t

tell. Let the listener imagine and
create images in the minds. Make
them look, not simply listen.

Department of Education
BASIC PRINCIPLES OF SCRIPTWRITING
FOR TELEVISION

Don’t overload your script/texts

with so many information.
Simplify or round numbers. Say,
nearly 15 million, instead of 14,
990.00.

Avoid repetitive terms, overused

words, and tongue twisters.
