Duration: 1 hr. Max Marks: 20

Instructions:
i. All questions are compulsory.
ii. Answer all the parts of a question at one place only.
iii. Missing data may be suitably assumed.
iv. Only use of non-programmable scientific calculator is permitted.

1 a) What are the necessary conditions to get a clearly observable and [2] [CO 1,
stationary interference pattern? CO 2]

b) In a Young’s double slit experimental arrangement, the slits are [3] [CO 2,
illuminated with a monochromatic light of wavelength 560 nm. CO 6]
Calculate the linear distance of the 4th minimum from the central
maximum on the screen, if the screen is placed at a distance of 55cm
away from the slits. Consider the slits are separated by 0.12mm apart
from each other.

c) Draw the schematic diagram of Michelson’s Interferometer with proper [3] [CO 1,
labelling of the optical components used. What is the role of the CO 2]
compensating glass plate present in the Michelson Interferometer?
Explain briefly.

2 a) In case of a single slit diffraction pattern, show that the central [2] [CO 2,
maximum becomes wider if the slit is made narrower. CO 6]

b) State and explain the Rayleigh’s criterion of just resolution of two [2] [CO 1,
spectral lines of equal intensities giving suitable intensity distribution CO 2]
curves.

c) Considering all slits are equally spaced, show that the dispersive power [3] [CO 2,
in any multi-slit arrangement is inversely proportional to the spacing CO 6]
between the slits.

3 a) “Light wave can be polarized but polarization of any sound wave is not [2] [CO 1,
possible” – why? CO 2]

b) Two polarizing sheets have their polarizing axis parallel to each other, [3] [CO 2,
so that the intensity of the transmitted light is maximum. Through what CO 6]
angle must either sheet be turned so that the intensity may be drop to
one-third of the maximum intensity?
