4.0 DESIGN ASSUMPTIONS

Following assumptions were followed apart from the assumptions made under cl 3.1.7 and cl

3.2.7 in BS EN 1992-1-1:2004 while determining the resistance of sections and design of

members.

1. Plane sections remain plane. The surface of any cross section does not distort out of

plane during compression or tension or bending.

2. Strain (whether in tension or compression) in the bonded reinforcement is the same as

that in the surrounding concrete.

3. The tensile strength of the concrete is ignored, i.e. all concrete below the level of the

neutral axis is considered ineffective.

4. Lever arm should be ≤ 0.95d where section is designed to resist flexure and for shear it

should be ≤ 0.90d (d = effective depth of the section).

5. In the analysis of a cross section resisting a small axial load ≤ (0.1f cu x area), the effects

of the load may be ignored.

6. The structure is analyzed by simplifying in to 2D frames for manual calculations with

more conservative approach to the design.

7. A linear distribution of soil pressure across the base of footing is assumed based on the

soil acting as an elastic material and the footing having infinite rigidity.
